1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pleasure
1-3 in welcoming noted author and philanthropist Janice Woods Windle of
1-4 El Paso, who is visiting the Capitol on February 8, 1995, as guest
1-5 speaker of the Senate Ladies Club; and
1-6 WHEREAS, The esteemed Texan has recently published a novel
1-7 based on the lives of her ancestors that has become a bestseller,
1-8 True Women; filled with family lore, the novel is a tribute to
1-9 Texas women whose lives touched hers and recounts how they lived,
1-10 thought, and influenced the history of our state; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Her real ancestors and main characters in the book,
1-12 Euphemia Ashby King, Bettie Moss King, and Georgia Lawshe Woods,
1-13 touched and even shaped formative events in Texas history; their
1-14 stories are intertwined with the war for Texas independence, the
1-15 Civil War and Reconstruction, and the ongoing fight against the
1-16 natural elements; they fought off wolves, hostile Indians and
1-17 Yankees, befriended outcasts and mended community rifts, all the
1-18 while raising families and holding together their homes; and
1-19 WHEREAS, A remarkable woman in her own right, Mrs. Windle
1-20 spent 10 years researching her ancestors and interviewing relatives
1-21 and friends to complete the stories that had been passed down
1-22 through her family; and
1-23 WHEREAS, True Women has been acclaimed by the critics
2-1 and its many readers and has appeared on the bestseller lists of
2-2 B. Dalton bookstores, the Austin American-Statesman, and the
2-3 Dallas Morning News; more than 150 newspapers nationwide have
2-4 published articles on the book and its author; and
2-5 WHEREAS, An accomplished and versatile individual,
2-6 Janice Windle is president of El Paso Community Foundation and
2-7 is one of the most successful fundraisers in the country, having
2-8 raised more than $45 million for the organization that works to
2-9 improve the quality of life for residents of El Paso; and
2-10 WHEREAS, The wife of attorney Wayne Windle and the mother of
2-11 grown children, Janice has found time to use her boundless energy
2-12 in such diverse positions as director of the El Paso Bicentennial
2-13 Commission, as executive secretary to State Representative
2-14 George W. McCoppin, and as local campaign chairman for governors,
2-15 mayors, senators, and a president; and
2-16 WHEREAS, It is indeed an honor for the Texas Senate to extend
2-17 a warm welcome to Janice Windle and express its genuine delight in
2-18 her presence at the Texas Capitol; now, therefore, be it
2-19 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-20 74th Legislature, hereby commend Janice Woods Windle on her
2-21 superb contributions to the citizens of Texas with all best
2-22 wishes for continued success in her future endeavors; and, be
2-23 it further
2-24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-25 her as an expression of the admiration and appreciation of the
3-1 Texas Senate.
