    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
    1-3  pay tribute to the treasured City of El Paso as it celebrates
    1-4  El Paso Day at the State Capitol on February 8, 1995; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, El Paso is an oasis in the West Texas desert,
    1-6  surrounded by majestic mountains and boasting the perfect climate
    1-7  of the high mountain desert; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, The City of El Paso is located on the border of
    1-9  three states and two nations and is justifiably proud of the
   1-10  rich 400-year history that it shares with its sister city,
   1-11  Ciudad Juarez; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, For the past 400 years, "El Paso del Norte"
   1-13  has worked together as one community with its sister city,
   1-14  Ciudad Juarez, in Chihuahua, Mexico; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The El Paso area was brought under more than two
   1-16  centuries of Spanish rule in 1598 when Juan de Onate took formal
   1-17  possession of the area for Philip II of Spain; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, In 1848, a United States military post, later
   1-19  named Fort Bliss was founded, and in 1873, El Paso was established
   1-20  as a city in the United States; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Known as an outstanding location for retirement
   1-22  living, a superb climate, breathtaking scenery, and easy access to
   1-23  Mexico make the city one of the most popular tourist destinations
    2-1  in the state; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, This historic city is the home of Texas' oldest
    2-3  Native American tribe, the Tiguas, who helped build Ysleta Mission;
    2-4  the city is also the location of historic Hueco Tanks State Park
    2-5  and Franklin Mountains State Park, the largest urban wilderness
    2-6  area in Texas; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, In a town which has the best Mexican food in the
    2-8  world, people can also see the 1966 National Collegiate Athletic
    2-9  Association basketball champions, The University of Texas at
   2-10  El Paso Miners; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, This exotic international city is the fourth
   2-12  largest city in Texas; as the gateway to both Texas and Mexico,
   2-13  it is the largest international trade center between the Pacific
   2-14  Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, Home to some of the oldest missions located in
   2-16  the United States, El Paso is known for lavish festivals
   2-17  celebrating all aspects of its colorful past; the city takes
   2-18  great pride in presenting Viva El Paso, the Fiesta de las Flores,
   2-19  the Ysleta Festival, and the First Thanksgiving; now, therefore,
   2-20  be it
   2-21        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-22  74th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to the grand
   2-23  and historic City of El Paso as it observes El Paso Day on
   2-24  February 8, 1995; and, be it further
   2-25        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
    3-1  the city as a memento of this felicitous occasion and as an
    3-2  expression of the highest regard and esteem of the Texas Senate.
