    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, February 19, 1995, marks the 90th birthday of a
    1-3  respected and beloved citizen of Lubbock, Clem B. Boverie; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Born in 1905 to C. B. and Rebecca Boverie in
    1-5  Aberdeen, Texas, the eighth of 10 children, young Clem was
    1-6  raised in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School;
    1-7  and
    1-8        WHEREAS, After attending Draughon's Business School in
    1-9  Fort Worth, the young man moved to Lubbock in 1928 to enroll
   1-10  at Texas Tech University; electing to apply for part-time work
   1-11  to avoid a long registration line and finding the only position
   1-12  available at Clarence Saunders Food Store to be full-time, he
   1-13  intended to enroll at Tech the following semester, and though
   1-14  he never attended Tech, he has been a faithful supporter of the
   1-15  university for many years; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The Saunders Food Store was purchased by "M"
   1-17  Systems, and in 1929 it was in turn purchased by Roy Furr, with
   1-18  whom Mr. Boverie built a close personal and business relationship
   1-19  that lasted until Mr. Furr's death; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Mr. Boverie began as a grocery sacker and
   1-21  advanced in his 50 years in the Furr chain to store manager,
   1-22  sales manager of the Lubbock division, President of Furr Food
   1-23  Stores, Incorporated, of Amarillo, Senior Vice-President of Furr
   1-24  Food Stores and President of Farm Pac Kitchens, Incorporated,
    2-1  and finally to Chairman of the Board of Furr's, Incorporated,
    2-2  and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Furr's Cafeterias,
    2-3  Incorporated; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, In addition to achieving remarkable success
    2-5  in his business activities, he has been actively involved
    2-6  in a wide variety of civic and humanitarian activities and
    2-7  organizations, including serving as president of Lubbock Lions
    2-8  Club, which in 1962 grew to be the largest Lions Club in the
    2-9  nation and held that distinction for more than 15 years; he
   2-10  also has made important contributions as President and Chairman
   2-11  of the United Way, President of the West Texas Museum Association,
   2-12  trustee and Secretary-Treasurer of Lubbock Christian University,
   2-13  first Chairman of the Coaches All-American Game, Vice-President
   2-14  of the Lubbock Symphony, Advisory Council Chairman and board
   2-15  member of the Children's Home of Lubbock, and board member of
   2-16  the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, Airport Board, Red Cross,
   2-17  Camp Fire Girls, Young Men's Christian Association, Lubbock Day
   2-18  Care Association, Southwest Guidance Center, Red Raider Club,
   2-19  and Junior League Emergency Center; and
   2-20        WHEREAS, He was named "Sales Executive of the Year" in
   2-21  1977 by the Sales Executive Association of Lubbock, named
   2-22  "Mr. United Way" for more than 30 years of service, presented
   2-23  an award by  Methodist Hospital for service on eight different
   2-24  hospital committees, recognized as a life member of the District
   2-25  2-T2 Lions Eye Bank, and congratulated in a proclamation read in
   2-26  behalf of more than 45,000 Lions Club members throughout the state;
   2-27  he also received the Servant Leadership Award of Lubbock Christian
    3-1  University in 1984, and he received the Lions Club Presidential
    3-2  Award in 1989; and
    3-3        WHEREAS, Mr. Boverie continues to work daily, is actively
    3-4  involved in his farms and investments, and contributes his time
    3-5  and talents to many civic organizations and to his church; and
    3-6        WHEREAS, On February 22, 1936, he became the husband of
    3-7  Estelle Griffin, beginning a long and rewarding marriage and a
    3-8  true partnership; during their happy years together, the couple
    3-9  has been blessed with three children, Robert, Glenda, and Nita,
   3-10  and now enjoy the company and affection of five grandchildren
   3-11  and many friends and relatives; and
   3-12        WHEREAS, During his long and fruitful life, Clem Boverie
   3-13  has been a source of happiness to those around him, has worked
   3-14  hard and productively both as a businessman and a volunteer, has
   3-15  exhibited character, warmth, generosity, and enthusiasm in all his
   3-16  activities, and has brightened the lives of countless individuals
   3-17  who have benefitted by personal contact with him or by his many good
   3-18  works; and
   3-19        WHEREAS, The occasion of his 90th birthday provides a
   3-20  fitting opportunity for his many friends and relatives to share
   3-21  with him their love and appreciation; now, therefore, be it
   3-22        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   3-23  74th Legislature, hereby honor Clem B. Boverie and extend warmest
   3-24  congratulations on the occasion of his 90th birthday; and, be it
   3-25  further
   3-26        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
   3-27  prepared for Mr. Boverie as an expression of highest regard by
    4-1  the Texas Senate.
