                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, February 19, 1995, marks the 90th birthday of a
    1-2  respected and beloved citizen of Lubbock, Clem B. Boverie; and
    1-3        WHEREAS, Born in 1905 to C. B. and Rebecca Boverie in
    1-4  Aberdeen, Texas, the eighth of 10 children, young Clem was raised
    1-5  in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, After attending Draughon's Business School in Fort
    1-7  Worth, the young man moved to Lubbock in 1928 to enroll at Texas
    1-8  Tech University; electing to apply for part-time work to avoid a
    1-9  long registration line and finding the only position available at
   1-10  Clarence Saunders Food Store to be full-time, he intended to enroll
   1-11  at Tech the following semester, and though he never attended Tech,
   1-12  he has been a faithful supporter of the university for many years;
   1-13  and
   1-14        WHEREAS, The Saunders Food Store was purchased by "M"
   1-15  Systems, and in 1929 it was in turn purchased by Roy Furr, with
   1-16  whom Mr. Boverie built a close personal and business relationship
   1-17  that lasted until Mr. Furr's death; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Mr. Boverie began as a grocery sacker and advanced
   1-19  in his 50 years in the Furr chain to store manager, sales manager
   1-20  of the Lubbock division, president of Furr Food Stores, Inc., of
   1-21  Amarillo, senior vice president of Furr Food Stores and president
   1-22  of Farm Pac Kitchens, Inc., and finally to chairman of the board of
   1-23  Furr's, Inc., and chairman of the executive committee of Furr's
   1-24  Cafeterias, Inc.; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, In addition to achieving remarkable success in his
    2-2  business activities, he has been actively involved in a wide
    2-3  variety of civic and humanitarian activities and organizations,
    2-4  including serving as president of Lubbock Lions Club, which in 1962
    2-5  grew to be the largest Lions Club in the nation and held that
    2-6  distinction for more than 15 years; he also has made important
    2-7  contributions as president and chairman of the United Way,
    2-8  president of the West Texas Museum Association, trustee and
    2-9  secretary-treasurer of Lubbock Christian University, first chairman
   2-10  of the Coaches All-American Game, vice president of the Lubbock
   2-11  Symphony, advisory council chairman and board member of the
   2-12  Children's Home of Lubbock, and board member of the Lubbock Chamber
   2-13  of Commerce, Airport Board, Red Cross, Camp Fire Girls, Y.M.C.A.,
   2-14  Lubbock Day Care Association, Southwest Guidance Center, Red Raider
   2-15  Club, and Junior League Emergency Center; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, He was named "Sales Executive of the Year" in 1977
   2-17  by the Sales Executive Association of Lubbock, named "Mr. United
   2-18  Way" for more than 30 years of service, presented an award by
   2-19  Methodist Hospital for service on eight different hospital
   2-20  committees, recognized as a life member of the District 2-T2 Lions
   2-21  Eye Bank, and congratulated in a proclamation read in behalf of
   2-22  more than 45,000 Lions Club members throughout the state; he also
   2-23  received the Servant Leadership Award of Lubbock Christian
   2-24  University in 1984, and he received the Lions Club Presidential
   2-25  Award in 1989; and
   2-26        WHEREAS, Mr. Boverie continues to work daily, is actively
   2-27  involved in his farms and investments, and contributes his time and
    3-1  talents to many civic organizations and to his church; and
    3-2        WHEREAS, On February 22, 1936, he became the husband of
    3-3  Estelle Griffin, beginning a long and rewarding marriage and a true
    3-4  partnership; during their happy years together, the couple have
    3-5  been blessed with three children, Robert, Glenda, and Nita, and now
    3-6  enjoy the company and affection of five grandchildren and many
    3-7  friends and relatives; and
    3-8        WHEREAS, During his long and fruitful life, Clem Boverie has
    3-9  been a source of happiness to those around him, has worked hard and
   3-10  productively both as a businessman and a volunteer, has exhibited
   3-11  character, warmth, generosity, and enthusiasm in all his
   3-12  activities, and has brightened the lives of countless individuals
   3-13  who have benefited by personal contact with him or by his many good
   3-14  works; and
   3-15        WHEREAS, The occasion of his 90th birthday provides a fitting
   3-16  opportunity for his many friends and relatives to share with him
   3-17  their love and appreciation; now, therefore, be it
   3-18        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 74th
   3-19  Legislature, hereby honor Clem B. Boverie and extend warmest
   3-20  congratulations on the occasion of his 90th birthday; and, be it
   3-21  further
   3-22        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   3-23  prepared for Mr. Boverie as an expression of highest regard by the
   3-24  Texas Senate.
