No. 215 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Mario Martinez Gallegos 1-5 WHEREAS, On February 14, 1995, the members of the Texas Senate 1-6 honor the memory of an eminent Texan, Mario Martinez Gallegos; and 1-7 WHEREAS, A native of Houston born on February 14, 1926, 1-8 Mr. Gallegos worked for many years for several Texas communities; 1-9 he retired with the rank of captain in the Houston Fire Department 1-10 after 21 outstanding years of memorable service; and 1-11 WHEREAS, This dedicated man served as fire chief for the 1-12 community of Brownsville after he retired from the Houston 1-13 department; he then returned to Houston to serve as an arson 1-14 investigator with the office of the Harris County Fire Marshal 1-15 for eight years; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A patriotic American, Mr. Gallegos served with 1-17 distinction in the United States Navy during World War II; he 1-18 continued to serve his country as a post commander and life member 1-19 of American Legion Post 472; as a firm supporter of the Democratic 1-20 Party, he contributed his expertise as a leader of the Harris County 1-21 Democratic Executive Committee; he was also a member of the Texas 1-22 Challenging Delegation to the 1968 Democratic National Convention; 1-23 and 2-1 WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime of service in fire prevention, 2-2 this distinguished gentleman was a member of several professional 2-3 organizations which included the Houston Professional Fire Fighters 2-4 Association, the State Fireman and Fire Marshal's Association, and 2-5 the International Association of Fire Chiefs; and 2-6 WHEREAS, His extraordinary devotion to his profession 2-7 caused him to earn the praise of his peers; hundreds of these 2-8 friends and colleagues paid tribute to him at a memorial service 2-9 in August of 1990; and 2-10 WHEREAS, During his life, Mr. Gallegos was supported and 2-11 encouraged by his family and his lovely wife, Olga, who was a 2-12 trustee of the Houston Independent School District; and 2-13 WHEREAS, A man of great ability and unquestioned integrity, 2-14 he will continue to be greatly missed by everyone who had the 2-15 privilege of knowing him; he leaves a legacy of compassion and 2-16 commitment that is unequaled; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 74th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of service 2-19 of Mario Martinez Gallegos and extend sincere sympathy to the 2-20 members of his family: his wife, Olga Gallegos; his mother 2-21 and stepfather, Ventura Alonzo and Frank Alonzo, Sr.; his sons, 2-22 Joel Gallegos, Michael Gallegos, and Mario Gallegos, Jr.; his 2-23 daughters, Mary Lou Veloz, Lillian Villarreal, Cynthia Trevino, 2-24 and Olga Rodriquez; his brothers, Oscar Gallegos, George Gallegos, 2-25 Robert Gallegos, and Alonzo Alonzo; his sisters, Minerva Villagomez, 3-1 Linda Rodriguez, Yolanda Lorio, and Mary Sanchez; and his 3-2 17 grandchildren; and, be it further 3-3 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his 3-4 family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, 3-5 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 3-6 Mario Martinez Gallegos. 3-7 ______________________________________ 3-8 President of the Senate 3-9 I hereby certify that the above 3-10 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-11 on February 14, 1995, by a rising vote. 3-12 ______________________________________ 3-13 Secretary of the Senate 3-14 ______________________________________ 3-15 Member, Texas Senate
