    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, June 24, 1995, is a historic day in the life of
    1-3  Sacred Heart Parish in Del Rio, Texas, for on that day the parish
    1-4  will celebrate the glorious occasion of its 100th anniversary; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, To commemorate this important centennial,
    1-6  parishioners of Sacred Heart are publishing a commemorative book
    1-7  based on their historical research depicting important events in
    1-8  the lives of pioneer families and courageous Oblate missionaries
    1-9  that led to the establishment of Sacred Heart Parish; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, As early as 1859, traveling Catholic missionaries
   1-11  served the vast southwestern part of Texas; as the railroad
   1-12  pushed westward, growing populations necessitated permanent
   1-13  church establishments in the area; the first church in Del Rio
   1-14  was built in 1892 and Sacred Heart Parish was formally established
   1-15  in 1895; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Prior to the establishment of the parish, villagers
   1-17  attended religious services at the hacienda of the Losoya sisters
   1-18  who had moved to the vicinity in 1862; Oblate fathers from
   1-19  Eagle Pass made monthly visits to the estate where the Catholic
   1-20  community gathered; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Today, Sacred Heart Church has expanded its mission
   1-22  to include many outreach and support groups as the needs of the
   1-23  population change; it continues to be a source of friendship, hope,
    2-1  and comfort to those who worship there; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, One of the oldest parochial educational institutions
    2-3  in the Southwest, Sacred Heart Catholic School has been important
    2-4  to the education of thousands of students who have given exceptional
    2-5  service to their communities around the state and across the nation;
    2-6  and
    2-7        WHEREAS, Throughout the past century, members of Sacred Heart
    2-8  Parish have celebrated Mass and have been blessed through the
    2-9  sacraments while receiving spiritual sustenance; now, therefore,
   2-10  be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-12  74th Legislature, hereby commend the members of Sacred Heart
   2-13  Parish and extend congratulations to them on this notable milestone
   2-14  in the life of the parish; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented to the
   2-16  congregation as a memento of this blessed day.
