    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                            Irvin M. Brown
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the family
    1-6  and many friends of Irvin M. Brown in mourning the loss of this
    1-7  prominent community leader who died February 13, 1995, at the age
    1-8  of 63; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Born January 1, 1932, in West Columbia, Texas, he
   1-10  had lived in Corpus Christi for 40 years; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, A Nueces County sheriff's deputy, Lieutenant Brown
   1-12  was a well-known leader of the black community in Corpus Christi;
   1-13  he was president of the local National Association for the
   1-14  Advancement of Colored People from 1965 to 1971; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Lieutenant Brown was one of those courageous men
   1-16  who risk their lives every day to protect the lives, neighborhoods,
   1-17  and property of our citizens; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman was an activist who
   1-19  continually sought to improve the lives of others; he had recently
   1-20  dedicated himself to securing funding for the Drug Abuse Resistance
   1-21  Education program which he had headed for the sheriff's department
   1-22  since 1987; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, A man of action, Lieutenant Brown made efforts to
    2-1  encourage voter registration, supported his community in various
    2-2  marches, and even installed door locks at the homes of many senior
    2-3  citizens; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, A man of deep religious beliefs, he was an active
    2-5  member of Saint John Baptist Church; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Respected and beloved by all who knew him,
    2-7  Lieutenant Brown will be remembered for his devotion to public
    2-8  service and to his family, city, and church; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, A dedicated family man, he and his lovely wife,
   2-10  Virginia, were the parents of three sons; his absence will be
   2-11  keenly felt; now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-13  74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to his
   2-14  family:  his wife, Virginia; his son, Erwin W. Brown; his stepsons,
   2-15  Fred Hopkins and John Hopkins; and his sisters, Thelma Waddy and
   2-16  Cora Faye Lee; and, be it further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
   2-18  family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
   2-19  and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
   2-20  Lieutenant Irvin M. Brown.
