No. 261 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize Barbara Venton Montgomery who is resigning as chair 1-4 of the Democratic Party in Rockwall County; and 1-5 WHEREAS, This noted scholar and educator has been active 1-6 in politics for many years; she was the county chair from 1980 to 1-7 1985 and again in 1992 to 1995; and 1-8 WHEREAS, She earned her bachelor of science degree in 1-9 journalism and graduated with honors from the University of 1-10 Illinois in 1947; she earned her master of arts degree in history 1-11 and graduated with highest honors from the University of California 1-12 at Northridge in 1961; and she was awarded her doctorate in history 1-13 from Loyola University with a letter of commendation from the dean 1-14 of the graduate school in 1973; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Winner of the National Teaching Excellence Award in 1-16 1989, she was a Fulbright Fellow to Israel in 1985 and to Korea in 1-17 1994; and 1-18 WHEREAS, A professor of history at El Centro Community 1-19 College since 1972, Barbara Montgomery was the author and designer 1-20 of the first United States history survey course for college 1-21 credit on television; and 1-22 WHEREAS, An alcoholism counselor since 1962, she was on the 1-23 Advisory Committee to the North Central Texas Council of Governments 2-1 on Alcohol and Drug Abuse in 1986; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Elected Director of the Dallas Council on World 2-3 Affairs for 1989 and from 1993 to the present time, she is in 2-4 the Directory of American Scholars, a member of the Biblical 2-5 Archaelogical Society, the Archaelogical Institute of America, 2-6 the Conference on Latin American Studies, and the Texas Municipal 2-7 Courts Association, and a consultant to the Library of Congress 2-8 on Latin America; and 2-9 WHEREAS, She won the Miles Production Award for teaching 2-10 excellence in the Dallas County Community College District in 2-11 1987, was named the Dallas County Community College District 2-12 Teacher of the Year in 1987, was a nominee to the First Texas 2-13 Women's Hall of Fame, won the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge 2-14 Award for Historical Writing, and was the Texas Cultural Alliance 2-15 Good Will Ambassador to Mexico in 1982; truly this esteemed lady 2-16 is worthy of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 74th Legislature, hereby commend Barbara Venton Montgomery and 2-19 express appreciation to her for her service as chair of the 2-20 Democratic Party of Rockwall County; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-22 her as a token of great respect from the Texas Senate. 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 President of the Senate 2-25 I hereby certify that the above 3-1 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-2 on March 6, 1995. 3-3 ______________________________________ 3-4 Secretary of the Senate 3-5 ______________________________________ 3-6 Member, Texas Senate
