    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
    1-3  joining Bank of America in honoring Dr. Willie Lee Glass for her
    1-4  lifetime of contributions in education to African-Americans and
    1-5  her selection as a Living Legend in Education; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, A woman of remarkable talent and vivacity,
    1-7  Dr. Willie Glass began her career in education in 1933 as the
    1-8  head of the Food and Nutrition Department in Home Economics at
    1-9  Virginia State College; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, In 1936, Willie Glass moved to Tyler after marrying
   1-11  Dr. D. R. Glass, the president of Texas College; she then created
   1-12  her own arduous schedule as the helpmate of President Glass,
   1-13  becoming active in a wide array of educational causes; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Mrs. Glass dedicated herself to organizing
   1-15  fundraising projects at Texas College and was a prominent force
   1-16  behind the annual United Negro College Fund drives and securing
   1-17  funds for the first college paved walkways and streets, a
   1-18  distinctive college entrance, and a sprinkler system; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, She also devoted her energy to establishing a home
   1-20  economics department with the appropriate approved and accredited
   1-21  laboratories; the modern and well-equipped home economics building
   1-22  at Texas College today has been named in her honor; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Dr. Glass's charm and her zest for improved
    2-1  educational facilities and opportunities led her to prominence
    2-2  in the educational field in Texas and to many steadfast
    2-3  friendships with some of the state's most influential people;
    2-4  she has served 10 Texas governors and was invited by the late
    2-5  President Dwight D. Eisenhower to represent the state and nation
    2-6  on a Travel Program delegation to Scandinavia, Poland, and the
    2-7  Soviet Union; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, She was inducted into the Texas Hall of Fame in
    2-9  1985 and still serves on 18 boards including Stephen F. Austin
   2-10  State University, The University of Texas Foundation, and the East
   2-11  Texas Lighthouse for the Blind; she continues to remain steadfast
   2-12  in her goal of increasing contributions to the United Negro College
   2-13  Fund; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, Dr. Willie Glass is an exemplary individual who
   2-15  is well known for her exceptional energy, intelligence, and
   2-16  enthusiasm, and she is beloved and respected by colleagues,
   2-17  friends, and political and educational leaders across the
   2-18  state; now, therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-20  74th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Willie Lee Glass for her
   2-21  outstanding achievements and for her many contributions to the
   2-22  field of education in the Lone Star State; and, be it further
   2-23        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-24  her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
