    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased and
    1-3  proud to recognize John P. Jones who is being honored as a Living
    1-4  Legend in Education in a ceremony to be held February 24, 1995, in
    1-5  the Tyler Rose Garden; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, This prestigious award is being given to Mr. Jones
    1-7  for his outstanding achievement in education and for preserving
    1-8  the rich heritage of African-Americans in Texas; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Mr. Jones is a distinguished graduate of Emmett Scott
   1-10  High School and Texas College in Tyler; he furthered his education
   1-11  at the University of Chicago, Teachers College, and Columbia
   1-12  University; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, When this outstanding educator retired from Texas
   1-14  College in 1988, he ended a career of 53 years in teaching, research,
   1-15  and administration; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, His 53-year tenure in education included his
   1-17  service as President of Jarvis Christian College and as interim
   1-18  president of Texas College; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, An exemplary role model, he was noted for his hard
   1-20  work and dedication to his students; Mr. Jones contributed his
   1-21  expertise to assuring the excellent education of our young people,
   1-22  and they in turn respected and revered him; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, As a reflection of the admiration which he inspired,
    2-1  he received honorary doctorates from Texas Christian University,
    2-2  Texas College, and Phillips University; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, A positive influence in the lives of his students,
    2-4  he taught them a lifelong love of learning; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Throughout his career Mr. Jones was supported in
    2-6  his work by his wife, Nollie V., and his two children, Rhoda Marie
    2-7  and John Albert; now, therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-9  74th Legislature, hereby commend the life of service of
   2-10  John P. Jones and congratulate him on being selected a Living
   2-11  Legend in Education; and, be it further
   2-12        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-13  Mr. Jones as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
