No. 293 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, On March 14 and 15, 1995, the Texas Senate will 1-3 join the members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, 1-4 in paying tribute to one of the Lone Star State's most notable 1-5 community service organizations; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority can trace its origins 1-7 to 1913, when 22 women at Howard University united with the common 1-8 purposes of promoting scholastic achievement and contributing their 1-9 time and resources to helping members of their local community; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Today, the spirit of these founding members lives on, 1-11 and this remarkable association is now one of the world's leading 1-12 sororities for African-American women; with more than 700 chapters 1-13 and 175,000 members internationally, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority 1-14 plays a vital role in providing a united voice on a number of 1-15 health and human services issues for people around the globe; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In its effort to improve the lives of those around 1-17 them, the sisters of this organization work to promote educational 1-18 development, economic development, physical and mental health, 1-19 political awareness and involvement, and international awareness 1-20 and involvement, both in their local communities and on a global 1-21 scale; and 1-22 WHEREAS, To these ends, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has 1-23 initiated a number of highly successful programs targeting 2-1 illiteracy, drug abuse, unemployment, gang violence, teen 2-2 pregnancy, infant mortality, kidney disease, and AIDS; members 2-3 of this exemplary sorority, which include mayors, legislators, 2-4 university presidents, and United States presidential appointees, 2-5 take an active role in shaping education and health policy in our 2-6 state and nation; and 2-7 WHEREAS, In light of these outstanding achievements it is 2-8 indeed fitting that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority be given special 2-9 recognition and support for its efforts in providing health 2-10 services and educational programs to promote human welfare; now, 2-11 therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 74th Legislature, hereby designate March 14 and 15, 1995, as Delta 2-14 Days at the State Capitol in honor of the members and officers of 2-15 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared 2-17 for the members and officers of this distinguished organization as 2-18 an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 President of the Senate 2-21 I hereby certify that the above 2-22 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-23 on February 23, 1995. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 Secretary of the Senate 3-1 ______________________________________ 3-2 Member, Texas Senate
