    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas would like to
    1-3  salute the many Texans of German descent who have contributed
    1-4  so much to the development of their state; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, These Texans of German heritage have thoroughly
    1-6  influenced the development of culture and history, and their
    1-7  influence is felt in every aspect of our state; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, German immigrants began to settle in Texas during
    1-9  the last years that Mexico still had jurisdiction over the land;
   1-10  the German settlers prized their freedom highly and joined
   1-11  wholeheartedly with other Texans to win their independence; they
   1-12  were brave combatants in the battles at Goliad, San Jacinto, and
   1-13  the Alamo; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, The German pioneers who came to this area were
   1-15  people who worked indefatigably to create prosperous farms,
   1-16  ranches, and homes, even in the most adverse circumstances; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, German immigration increased markedly after the
   1-18  end of the Civil War; inhabitants from Germany relocated to Texas
   1-19  until well after the end of the 19th century; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Admired for their tenacity and intelligence, these
   1-21  new citizens earned success in every field and endeavor; their
   1-22  influence has been felt particularly in the economic life of the
   1-23  state; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, One of the largest ethnic groups in the state,
    2-2  Texans of German descent are proud of their heritage and the
    2-3  fact that much of their culture has remained intact; their many
    2-4  accomplishments are certainly worthy of legislative recognition;
    2-5  now, therefore, be it
    2-6        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-7  74th Legislature, hereby recognize the first week of October, 1995,
    2-8  as German Cultural Awareness Week in the State of Texas.
