    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize Bastrop Christian Church of Bastrop, Texas, on the
    1-4  grand occasion of the 100th anniversary of the church building;
    1-5  and
    1-6        WHEREAS, The Christian Church is the oldest denomination
    1-7  founded in America; the religion places a strong emphasis on the
    1-8  Lord's Supper as a central part of worship, and the Disciples of
    1-9  Christ have chosen a red chalice for their symbol; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Bastrop Christian Church is a member of the
   1-11  Bluebonnet Area of Christian churches which covers a large area
   1-12  in the South Central portion of Texas; it is related to 33 higher
   1-13  education institutions, including Texas Christian University and
   1-14  Brite Theological Seminary; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The Bastrop Christian Church was organized before
   1-16  1857, and the present building was constructed and the congregation
   1-17  was chartered in 1895; the church is a New England Victorian
   1-18  architectural structure with beautiful stained-glass windows and
   1-19  a stately spire; at the time of construction, John White was the
   1-20  contractor and Reverend B. B. Sanders was serving as pastor; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Prior to the construction of the present church,
   1-22  a small rock church occupied the building site; the bell from
   1-23  the first church was acquired from a steamboat that cruised the
    2-1  Colorado River, and it is that bell that was placed in the belfry
    2-2  of Bastrop Christian Church; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, For 108 years, Bastrop Christian Church has
    2-4  ministered faithfully to the physical and spiritual needs of
    2-5  innumerable Christians; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Due to the guidance and wise stewardship of its
    2-7  pastors and the outstanding leadership of its current pastor,
    2-8  the church has continued to grow and to undertake many worthy
    2-9  projects within the community; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, Bastrop Christian Church has become an invaluable
   2-11  source of strength for church members during their hardships and
   2-12  in times of bereavement; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, The magnificent church building that belongs to
   2-14  Bastrop Christian Church is a source of pride to the citizens
   2-15  of Bastrop and a landmark from the past that is treasured by
   2-16  all who see it; now, therefore, be it
   2-17        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-18  74th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and
   2-19  members of Bastrop Christian Church on the jubilant occasion
   2-20  of the 100th anniversary of the church building; and, be it
   2-21  further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-23  the church as a token of appreciation from the Texas Senate.
