No. 341 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 John Conrad Dunagan 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-6 of Monahans in mourning the loss of John Conrad Dunagan who died 1-7 February 10, 1995, at the age of 80; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Born December 31, 1914, in Midland, John Dunagan 1-9 graduated from Midland High School in 1931 and attended 1-10 The University of Texas at Austin; he married Kathlyn Cosper and 1-11 moved to Monahans in 1933; and 1-12 WHEREAS, A leading West Texas businessman and philanthropist, 1-13 John Dunagan served for half a century with one of the state's most 1-14 prominent bottling companies, Monahans Coca-Cola Bottling Company, 1-15 later known as Permian Coca-Cola Bottling Company; and 1-16 WHEREAS, From 1933 to 1983, he served the company as a 1-17 manager, partner, and president and was held in high esteem by his 1-18 colleagues in the bottling industry on both the state and national 1-19 levels; and 1-20 WHEREAS, A man of remarkable talent and versatility, 1-21 Mr. Dunagan helped organize the First State Bank in Monahans and 1-22 became its chairman of the board; he also was a cofounder of Kermit 1-23 State Bank and remained active with both banks until his death; his 2-1 other businesses included Midessa TV, Incorporated, Texas Savings 2-2 and Loan, and Southwest Canners of Portales, New Mexico; and 2-3 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, 2-4 John Dunagan was respected for his exceptional perseverance and 2-5 for his tremendous accomplishments; and 2-6 WHEREAS, A well-known civic leader, Mr. Dunagan served on 2-7 the Monahans City Council and was instrumental in the creation of 2-8 the Monahans Sandhills State Park; he was a charter member of the 2-9 Monahans Rotary Club and served on the board of the Historical 2-10 Association of Ward County; and 2-11 WHEREAS, He was an ardent supporter of education and was 2-12 appointed by President Eisenhower to serve on the President's 2-13 Council on Education; he played a major role in the formation of 2-14 The University of Texas of the Permian Basin and was honored with 2-15 its Distinguished Patron Award in 1991; and 2-16 WHEREAS, He was the founder of the Permian Honor 2-17 Scholarship Foundation which has awarded over 1,700 scholarships 2-18 to area students, and he was a member of the Executive Committee 2-19 of The University of Texas Systems Chancellors Council; and 2-20 WHEREAS, In recognition of his longtime philanthropic 2-21 activities, he was presented the Founder Spirit Award by the 2-22 Southwest Conference of Foundations and was selected to receive 2-23 the 1994 Community Statesman Award for philanthropy by the 2-24 Heritage of Odessa Foundation; and 2-25 WHEREAS, An avid historian, he wrote extensively on local 3-1 and business history and was a member of the West Texas Historical 3-2 Association, the Permian Historical Society, and the Texas State 3-3 Historical Association; and 3-4 WHEREAS, A man of integrity, compassion, enthusiasm, and 3-5 generosity, he gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his 3-6 wisdom, warmth, and invaluable leadership will not be forgotten 3-7 by those who knew him; and 3-8 WHEREAS, John Dunagan was a devoted husband, father, and 3-9 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured 3-10 forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it 3-11 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-12 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved 3-13 family of John Dunagan: his wife, Kathlyn Dunagan; his children, 3-14 Deanna, John Charles, Kathleen, and William Claiborne Dunagan and 3-15 Carol Dunagan Husbands; his mother, Ada Dunagan; and his 10 3-16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and, be it further 3-17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-18 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 3-19 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so 3-20 in memory of John Conrad Dunagan. 3-21 ______________________________________ 3-22 President of the Senate 3-23 I hereby certify that the above 3-24 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-25 on March 1, 1995, by a rising vote. 4-1 ______________________________________ 4-2 Secretary of the Senate 4-3 ______________________________________ 4-4 Member, Texas Senate
