    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, One of Texas' admired literary figures, John Graves,
    1-3  will be honored on March 4, 1995, by the Dallas Museum of Art, and
    1-4  the Texas Senate is proud to recognize this beloved Texan who has
    1-5  contributed so much to the history and beauty of the Lone Star
    1-6  State; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, "John Graves Day" will celebrate the life and
    1-8  contributions of one of America's most revered and influential
    1-9  writers and will salute his 75th year and 35th anniversary of
   1-10  the publication of his classic, Goodbye to a River; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Noted writers and actors will take part in the event
   1-12  which will launch the second annual Texas Writers Month observed
   1-13  throughout March, 1995; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, John Graves is renowned not only in Texas but also
   1-15  within a large  circle of nationally known writers who are also
   1-16  concerned with landscape and nature; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, A native of Fort Worth, John Graves graduated from
   1-18  Rice University and served his country during World War II as a
   1-19  member of the United States Marines; after earning a master's
   1-20  degree in English from Columbia University, he resided in several
   1-21  places, including Spain and New York, where he made his living as
   1-22  a journalist and writer; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, After returning to Texas in 1957, John took a canoe
    2-1  trip down the Brazos River that inspired him to write the classic,
    2-2  Goodbye to a River, that was nominated in 1961 for a National
    2-3  Book Award; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Mr. Graves lives with his wife, Jane, near
    2-5  Glen Rose in a house he built himself and describes in other major
    2-6  works, Hard Scrabble and From a Limestone Ledge; his distinctive
    2-7  style mixes his acute observations with history, folklore, fiction,
    2-8  autobiography, and philosophy; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Texas is indeed fortunate to have this gifted
   2-10  writer share his experiences through his enthralling stories;
   2-11  now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-13  74th Legislature, hereby express its deepest gratitude to
   2-14  John Graves and acknowledge his magnificent achievements in
   2-15  preserving the greatness of the Lone Star State in his writings;
   2-16  and, be it further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-18  this distinguished author as a token of the highest regard of
   2-19  the Texas Senate.
