    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased and
    1-3  proud to recognize the Alamo Defenders Descendants Association as
    1-4  it holds its first gathering of the families of the defenders of
    1-5  the Alamo in San Antonio on March 5, 1995; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Originally the site of a Spanish mission, the old
    1-7  buildings that composed what we know today as the Alamo were
    1-8  abandoned when it became the "Cradle of Texas Liberty" in 1836; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Rebelling against repressions of Mexico's
   1-10  self-proclaimed dictator, Santa Anna, a band of 189 brave Texas
   1-11  volunteers defied a Mexican army of 5,000 troops for 13 days of
   1-12  siege, from February 23 to March 6, 1836; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, William Barret Travis, the commander of the Alamo
   1-14  forces, along with Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and all the other
   1-15  gallant Texas fighting men, were killed to the last man; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The cost in Mexican lives was appalling; most
   1-17  authorities estimate that approximately 1,500 men died capturing
   1-18  the famous Texas shrine; the siege of the Alamo gave the courageous
   1-19  General Sam Houston enough time to rally Texas forces for another
   1-20  battle; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, The Texas forces, under General Sam Houston, defeated
   1-22  General Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836;
   1-23  the lives of the gallant defenders of the Alamo were not given in
    2-1  vain; each man who died there has become an immortal hero, and the
    2-2  members of the Alamo Defenders Descendants Association are gathering
    2-3  in San Antonio to celebrate the sacrifice of these distinguished
    2-4  warriors; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, The descendants of these slain heroes have every
    2-6  reason to count themselves among the most eminent of families, and
    2-7  the sacrifices made by their forefathers helped assure that Texas
    2-8  won her independence in 1836; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, All Texas citizens owe a debt of appreciation to the
   2-10  descendants of the defenders of the Alamo; now, therefore, be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-12  74th Legislature, hereby extend its gratitude to the Alamo Defenders
   2-13  Descendants Association as it holds its first annual assembly in
   2-14  San Antonio on March 5, 1995; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this
   2-16  esteemed group as an expression of the highest regard of the
   2-17  Texas Senate.
