No. 349 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to join 1-3 the citizens of Houston in honoring the Westfield High School 1-4 Concert Band for being awarded the Sudler Flag of Honor by the 1-5 John Philip Sousa Foundation; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The Sudler Flag of Honor is the nation's most 1-7 prestigious award for high school concert bands, and its purpose 1-8 is to identify, recognize, and honor high school band programs 1-9 throughout the United States that have demonstrated particularly 1-10 significant high standards of excellence in concert activities 1-11 over a period of several years; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Westfield High School Concert Band is the only band 1-13 in the United States to receive the cherished award this year; on 1-14 March 27, 1995, the John Philip Sousa Foundation will award the 1-15 Sudler Flag of Honor during a special ceremony to be attended by 1-16 distinguished Texans that will include a symphonic concert; and 1-17 WHEREAS, To receive this unique honor, the band must have 1-18 achieved and maintained high standards of excellence over a period 1-19 of several years, must offer a complete and balanced program of 1-20 musical activities, and must have a director with at least seven 1-21 years tenure; in addition, the organization should also have 1-22 been rated "superior" at the state, regional, national, and 1-23 international level and should have members who have participated 2-1 in district, all-state, or national honor bands; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The Sudler Flag of Honor recognizes and honors the 2-3 students, staff, alumni, and community members who have given so 2-4 unselfishly over the years to provide an exemplary program with a 2-5 sustained commitment to excellence and character; now, therefore, 2-6 be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-8 74th Legislature, hereby extend heartiest congratulations to 2-9 the Westfield High School Concert Band for its magnificent 2-10 accomplishments with all best wishes for the future; and, be 2-11 it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented to 2-13 this notable ensemble as an expression of the high regard of 2-14 the Texas Senate. 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 President of the Senate 2-17 I hereby certify that the above 2-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-19 on March 6, 1995. 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Secretary of the Senate 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Member, Texas Senate
