    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
    1-3  in recognizing Lillian Marie Cook Mitchell who is being honored
    1-4  on April 7, 1995, for her 50 years of Glorifying God with the
    1-5  "Gift"; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Lillian Cook Mitchell is known throughout the state
    1-7  and nation for her remarkable musical talent which she uses for
    1-8  the Glory of God through her services in church choirs; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, One of Houston's most accomplished interpreters of
   1-10  religious music, Mrs. Mitchell is the esteemed Minister of Music
   1-11  at Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church where she has served for
   1-12  29 years; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Lillian Cook began the formal study of music at
   1-14  the age of six, and by the time she was nine years old, she was the
   1-15  children's choir musician at Progressive New Hope Missionary Baptist
   1-16  Church; she studied music at the Clayton-Johnson School of Music and
   1-17  the Mary Ella Nathan-Price Conservatory of Music; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, She has served in the music ministry at numerous local
   1-19  churches, and for 12 years she served as the Directress of the
   1-20  famous Houston City Wide Youth Crusade Choir; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitchell is a composer and arranger whose
   1-22  works include "It's Just Good to Know the Lord," "If My People,"
   1-23  and "Remember Christ"; she is the author of "Techniques for Playing
    2-1  the Autoharp," "Teaching Young Children to Sing," and "Musicianship
    2-2  for Choir Members"; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitchell is highly respected for her versatility
    2-4  and resourcefulness, and she has worked as a teacher in the Houston
    2-5  School District Title I four-year-old Program and the Texas Southern
    2-6  University Head Start Leadership Development Program; she has served
    2-7  as a consultant for music and language arts at Wonderland Private
    2-8  School and as a music teacher workshop consultant for the Gonzales
    2-9  Independent School District; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, Lillian Mitchell is married to O. B. Mitchell, who
   2-11  is also a singer, and she has two talented children, Pamela D'vonne
   2-12  and Reverend Anthony Mitchell, who complete the singing Mitchell
   2-13  Family group; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Lillian Mitchell is an exemplary
   2-15  lady and is a greatly admired leader in her community; and through
   2-16  her exceptional talent and generosity, she touches the lives of
   2-17  many; now, therefore, be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-19  74th Legislature, hereby commend Lillian Cook Mitchell for her
   2-20  worthy accomplishments and extend appreciation to her for her
   2-21  inspirational work and her contributions to the state and nation;
   2-22  and, be it further
   2-23        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
   2-24  as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
