    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
    1-3  Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross in recognizing
    1-4  the month of March, 1995, as American Red Cross Month; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Since its founding by Clara Barton in 1881, the
    1-6  American Red Cross has been a steadfast source of support for our
    1-7  country during a wide array of emergency situations and in times
    1-8  of war, natural disaster, and depression; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, With more than one million volunteers, the American
   1-10  Red Cross plays a vital role in bringing physical and emotional
   1-11  comfort to those who need it most; the agency has provided
   1-12  emergency communications for men and women in the armed forces,
   1-13  financial assistance for those in need, and safety programs to
   1-14  help the public; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The American Red Cross has extended relief
   1-16  assistance to local communities in the State of Texas in cases
   1-17  of fire, flood, tornado, and hurricane; in addition to providing
   1-18  emergency care, the agency's broader mission has been to promote
   1-19  compassion, foster generosity, and improve the lives of the
   1-20  injured and impoverished; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, After five years of major disasters, including
   1-22  Hurricane Andrew, Hurricane Hugo, the Midwest floods, and the
   1-23  Los Angeles earthquake, the Red Cross has designated the month
    2-1  of March for seeking the support it so urgently needs from the
    2-2  American public; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, The Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the American
    2-4  Red Cross will be participating in a nationwide disaster drill
    2-5  on March 11 by opening mock shelters in Brownsville, Pharr, and
    2-6  Raymondville; chapter volunteers will be going through steps each
    2-7  should take in the event of a disaster in the Rio Grande Valley;
    2-8  and
    2-9        WHEREAS, It is appropriate that a state whose citizens have
   2-10  repeatedly been protected and aided by over 200 chapters of the
   2-11  American Red Cross give recognition and gratitude to this
   2-12  humanitarian agency during American Red Cross Month; now,
   2-13  therefore, be it
   2-14        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-15  74th Legislature, hereby commend the American Red Cross for its
   2-16  many years of assistance to citizens across our country and
   2-17  encourage individuals and groups throughout our state to join the
   2-18  Rio Grande Valley Chapter in actively participating in American
   2-19  Red Cross Month and in supporting this invaluable agency; and, be
   2-20  it further
   2-21        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-22  the American Red Cross as an expression of highest regard from
   2-23  the Texas Senate.
