    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
    1-3  recognize the grand occasion of the ground-breaking for the
    1-4  construction of the Katy and E. Don Walker, Sr., Education Center
    1-5  at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum Complex; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Named in honor of the late Everitt Donald Walker and
    1-7  his wife, Kathryn Keneaster Walker, the 18,500 square-foot facility
    1-8  is scheduled for completion in 1995 and will house a teaching
    1-9  auditorium, exhibit area, gift shop, educational classrooms, and
   1-10  offices for museum staff and docents; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Everitt Don Walker received his bachelor of science
   1-12  degree in business administration from Sam Houston State University
   1-13  in 1948, where he also earned all-conference honors in basketball;
   1-14  he earned a masters of business administration degree in 1949 from
   1-15  The University of Texas; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, One of the state's finest educators, Mr. Walker
   1-17  began his career as an auditor at Sam Houston State University; he
   1-18  joined The University of Texas System in 1955 as a business manager
   1-19  for The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and in
   1-20  1978, he became chancellor of The University of Texas System, a
   1-21  position he held until 1984; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Talented and versatile, Mr. Walker was active in
   1-23  numerous professional associations and civic activities; he served
    2-1  on the Committee on Master Planning for Colleges and Universities,
    2-2  Coordinating Board, Texas College and University System, was a
    2-3  member of the Philosophical Society, and was a member of the Board
    2-4  of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Galveston, Texas; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, During Mr. Walker's successful rise in educational
    2-6  administration, he had the love and support of his wife, Katy,
    2-7  who was well known for her intelligence, charm, and graciousness;
    2-8  Mrs. Walker was also a graduate of Sam Houston State University
    2-9  where she majored in history; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Walker were outstanding citizens whose
   2-11  many contributions to the field of education and to the state
   2-12  continue to benefit Texans today; donations from their estate
   2-13  answered a challenge grant from the Meadows Foundation making the
   2-14  center for the museum possible; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, The new structure at the museum is a tribute to
   2-16  these two exceptional people who will continue to live on through
   2-17  the many contributions they left behind; now, therefore, be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-19  74th Legislature, hereby commend the numerous accomplishments of
   2-20  Mr. and Mrs. Walker and extend congratulations to all associated
   2-21  with Sam Houston State University on the construction of the
   2-22  Katy and E. Don Walker, Sr., Education Center; and, be it further
   2-23        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-24  Sam Houston Memorial Museum Complex.
