    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
    1-3  recognize the members of the Southlake Youth Advisory Commission
    1-4  who are visiting Austin to learn about the inner workings of state
    1-5  government; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, The City of Southlake has implemented an innovative
    1-7  program to encourage the youth of the community to have an active
    1-8  voice in city government; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Recognizing the value of young people and their
   1-10  input into the decisions that affect their daily lives, the
   1-11  Southlake City Council created the Southlake Youth Advisory
   1-12  Commission on July 21, 1994, to serve as the "voice of youth"
   1-13  for the city; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, The youth commission is designed to cultivate a
   1-15  relationship between the community's youth and municipal government
   1-16  by allowing students a chance to have an active part in the
   1-17  governmental process; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Under the general direction of the city's mayor,
   1-19  the Southlake Youth Advisory Commission is composed of three
   1-20  representatives from each grade level in both the middle school and
   1-21  the high school, with two at-large positions for students who live
   1-22  in Southlake but do not attend schools in the Carroll Independent
   1-23  School District; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Meeting twice a month, the students do research and
    2-2  discuss issues they identify as important including volunteerism,
    2-3  drug and alcohol use, and whether to implement a school curfew;
    2-4  their input will advise the city council of their concerns; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Additionally, the members of the commission
    2-6  will learn about the inner workings of city government during
    2-7  presentations by city staff and by spending a day with the mayor;
    2-8  and
    2-9        WHEREAS, The positive relationship between community leaders
   2-10  and young people will strengthen community spirit and understanding
   2-11  among all citizens and lead to more successful solutions to vital
   2-12  issues; now, therefore, be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-14  74th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Southlake Youth
   2-15  Advisory Commission for their excellent work and extend a warm
   2-16  welcome to them on their visit to the State Capitol; and, be it
   2-17  further
   2-18        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
   2-19  expression of the admiration and appreciation of the Texas Senate.
