No. 478 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to join 1-3 the citizens of the City of Graham and Young County in a joyous 1-4 celebration of "Graham-Young County Community Day" in Austin on 1-5 March 21, 1995; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Active participants in legislative affairs over 1-7 many years, the citizens of Young County are industrious and 1-8 progressive citizens who are proud of the excellent communities 1-9 they have developed for their families and neighbors; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Located in North Central Texas, Young County is 1-11 situated mostly in the Western Cross Timbers but the northwest 1-12 section is on the West Texas plains; traversed by the Brazos River 1-13 from northwest to southeast, the county was home to countless 1-14 generations of Indians until the mid-1800s; it is the site of 1-15 a former large Indian reservation; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Fort Belknap was one of the most important and 1-17 one of the largest military posts in North Texas prior to the 1-18 Civil War, and it was maintained until 1876 for the protection of 1-19 early settlers and travelers; a few original buildings still stand 1-20 and replicas of others were built by the state in 1936; today the 1-21 site is a countywide recreation park and the scene of historical 1-22 and civic meetings; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Named for Colonel William C. Young, an early 2-1 Texan, Young County was created from Bosque and Fannin counties 2-2 on February 2, 1856, and reorganized in 1874 when Graham became 2-3 the county seat; farming and stock raising were the principal 2-4 occupations; the Cattle Raisers Association of Texas was 2-5 organized in Graham in 1877; and 2-6 WHEREAS, The county produces an abundance of corn, grains, 2-7 cotton, peanuts, hay, pecans, fruits, and vegetables; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Although coal mining flourished in the early 1900s, 2-9 the discovery of oil with the drilling of the Lindy Lou well in 2-10 1917 caused the mining industry to decline and oil production to 2-11 boom; the area also produces natural gas, sand, and gravel; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Possum Kingdom Lake on the Brazos River and 2-13 Lakes Graham and Eddleman on Salt Creek offer vacationers 2-14 excellent fishing, boating, and water sports while hunting leases 2-15 bring sportsmen to the area and add to the county's economy; and 2-16 WHEREAS, The friendly folk of Young County provide visitors 2-17 with old-fashioned hospitality that springs from their western 2-18 heritage; they are understandably proud of their county's important 2-19 place in the history of the Lone Star State and of their unique 2-20 role in its development; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-22 74th Legislature, hereby extend hearty congratulations to the 2-23 citizens of Young County and extend best wishes to them for a 2-24 memorable "Graham-Young County Community Day"; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-1 the Young County delegation as a memento of this special day from 3-2 the Texas Senate. 3-3 ______________________________________ 3-4 President of the Senate 3-5 I hereby certify that the above 3-6 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-7 on March 20, 1995. 3-8 ______________________________________ 3-9 Secretary of the Senate 3-10 ______________________________________ 3-11 Member, Texas Senate
