By: Barrientos S.R. No. 485 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Felipe D. Acosta 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-6 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Felipe D. Acosta who 1-7 died March 3, 1995, at the age of 71; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Born in Lockhart, Texas, Felipe Acosta grew up in 1-9 Austin and served in the United States Army as a Sergeant Tank 1-10 Commander of the 706th Tank Battalion during World War II; and 1-11 WHEREAS, He became a member of the Catholic War Veterans 1-12 in 1947 when he joined Post 638 at Saint Mary's Cathedral and was 1-13 a charter member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Post 742; he was 1-14 instrumental in organizing Post 1805 at San Jose Church where 1-15 he held every office and served for four years as Post Commander; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, Mr. Acosta's leadership in the Catholic War Veterans 1-18 was recognized on the national level, and he served for two years 1-19 as State Commander; he was awarded the Saint Sebastian Medal, the 1-20 highest honor a member can receive; and 1-21 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, Mr. Acosta 1-22 was respected in the community for his many accomplishments and was 1-23 a well-known civic, religious, cultural, and political leader; and 2-1 WHEREAS, He served as president of many parent-teacher 2-2 associations and participated in and helped to organize several 2-3 Mexican-American political groups in Texas; he was president of 2-4 the Political Association of Spanish Organizations; and 2-5 WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he 2-6 gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, 2-7 and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; 2-8 and 2-9 WHEREAS, A devout Christian, he was a member of Our Lady 2-10 of Guadalupe Church and served for two years as president of the 2-11 Parish Council and the Parish Life Committee; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Felipe Acosta lived his life to the fullest and 2-13 was beloved by many, and his leadership in the community will be 2-14 greatly missed; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Felipe Acosta was a devoted husband, father, and 2-16 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured 2-17 forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-19 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 2-20 bereaved family of Felipe D. Acosta: his wife, Beatrice G. Acosta; 2-21 his daughters, Margaret Guerrero, Elizabeth "Liz" Acosta, and 2-22 Irene Acosta; his sons, Philip Acosta, Jr., and Mario Acosta; and 2-23 his 11 grandchildren; and, be it further 2-24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-25 the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy 3-1 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this 3-2 day, it do so in memory of Felipe Acosta. 3-3 ______________________________________ 3-4 President of the Senate 3-5 I hereby certify that the above 3-6 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-7 on March 20, 1995, by a rising vote. 3-8 ______________________________________ 3-9 Secretary of the Senate 3-10 ______________________________________ 3-11 Member, Texas Senate
