    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
    1-3  recognizing John T. Smith, who was made a candidate for Holy Orders
    1-4  in the Protestant Episcopal Church on March 16, 1995, after having
    1-5  fulfilled the other steps in the discernment process as an aspirant
    1-6  and postulant; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, John Smith graduated from Pennsylvania State
    1-8  University in 1972 with a bachelor of science degree in
    1-9  rehabilitation education; he married Barbara Jane Smith in
   1-10  1964, and the couple was blessed with two sons, Glenn Arthur
   1-11  and Richard Andrew; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, A man of many talents and interests, Mr. Smith
   1-13  worked for Aetna Casualty and Surety Company in New Jersey,
   1-14  Nebraska, and Pennsylvania in the commercial underwriting division
   1-15  for 13 years; he then worked for Merchants Insurance in Buffalo,
   1-16  New York, developing the company's EDGE program and working on
   1-17  other computer programs; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, An outstanding citizen and a leader in his
   1-19  community, John Smith was active in the Parent-Teacher Association
   1-20  and Cub Scouts of America in Nebraska and in several camping clubs
   1-21  in Nebraska and New Jersey; he was a member of the vestry at his
   1-22  church and served as stewardship chairman; he was also active in
   1-23  several Masonic offices; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Mr. Smith moved to Texas in August of 1993 and is
    2-2  now in his middler year at Episcopal Theological Seminary of the
    2-3  Southwest in Austin; he has participated in a number of activities
    2-4  on behalf of the seminary such as Visitors Weekend and the Alumni
    2-5  Phonathon; in his Clinical Pastoral Education internship, he served
    2-6  as a chaplain at Saint David's Hospital; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman, John Smith is a source of
    2-8  strength to others and gives generously of his time to his church
    2-9  and to his fellowman; he is a man of dedication and strong moral
   2-10  principles who achieves his goals through hard work and perseverance;
   2-11  now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-13  74th Legislature, hereby commend John Smith on his many
   2-14  accomplishments and extend congratulations to him on becoming
   2-15  a candidate for Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church; and, be it
   2-16  further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
   2-18  as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
