No. 535 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased and 1-3 proud to recognize the City of San Benito as it receives a Texas 1-4 State Historical Marker for the San Benito, Texas, Federal Post 1-5 Office on April 2, 1995; and 1-6 WHEREAS, In 1905, the first San Benito Post Office was 1-7 located in the Bohner building at the corner of Rowson and 1-8 Bowie streets; later, it was moved to North Sam Houston at the 1-9 corner of Stenger; next, it was located on Rowson Street in the 1-10 Agar building; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Hoping to encourage the federal government to build 1-12 a new post office, the City of San Benito donated the site for the 1-13 structure situated on North Sam Houston Boulevard; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Construction of the current post office began in 1-15 1931 and the official dedication was held on April 15, 1933; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The development of San Benito centered around the 1-17 post office which served as a meeting place for the entire 1-18 community; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Floyd Worth was the United States Postmaster at the 1-20 time of the building and the dedication, and C. L. Milner was the 1-21 Assistant Postmaster; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Constructed of red brick with stone trim and tall 1-23 white columns, the building was Greek Revival in style, with broad 2-1 stone steps flanked by bronze lampposts; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The building was constructed by Meriweather and 2-3 Sauer; the constructing engineer divided his time between the 2-4 building of the San Benito and the Harlingen post offices; and 2-5 WHEREAS, In the new post office, there were 1,349 boxes 2-6 which replaced the 831 boxes in the old post office; a deposit 2-7 of 20 cents was required on each key issued to the box holder; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Following the dedication and starting May 1, 1933, 2-9 the International Boundary Commission occupied the entire mezzanine 2-10 floor; the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Plant 2-11 Quarantine occupied the west side basement room; and 2-12 WHEREAS, The Immigration Service was assigned the front 2-13 space in the basement; a room on the north side of the basement 2-14 was allotted to the Civil Service Commission; and 2-15 WHEREAS, The current postmaster, Al Santa Ana, has greatly 2-16 promoted the history of the post office, and he has admirably 2-17 renovated the interior and the grounds; now, therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-19 74th Legislature, hereby congratulate the people of San Benito 2-20 as they celebrate the restoration of their post office and it 2-21 receives a State Historical Marker; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-23 San Benito Post Office as an expression of the high regard of the 2-24 Texas Senate. 2-25 ______________________________________ 3-1 President of the Senate 3-2 I hereby certify that the above 3-3 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-4 on March 23, 1995. 3-5 ______________________________________ 3-6 Secretary of the Senate 3-7 ______________________________________ 3-8 Member, Texas Senate
