    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  join the residents of Brazoria County in celebration of Tuesday,
    1-4  March 28, 1995, as Brazoria County Day; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, It is fitting that the Texas Senate pay tribute
    1-6  to a county that is rich in history and is home to a host of
    1-7  cities offering a wide array of opportunities; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Brazoria County was chosen as a settlement by
    1-9  Stephen F. Austin and his colonists in 1821; the county was
   1-10  created in 1836 and over the years has proved to be one of
   1-11  the most desirable counties in which to live in Texas; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, This attractive county is blessed with a wealth
   1-13  of natural resources and excellent soil that produces bountiful
   1-14  crops; it also boasts 20 miles of natural beach; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Rivers, lakes, inland marshes, and giant trees
   1-16  generously grace the landscape; in addition to providing for a
   1-17  beautiful countryside, widespread groves of oak, elm, cottonwood,
   1-18  and pecan trees have provided a lucrative industry for the county;
   1-19  and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Oil production began in Brazoria County as early
   1-21  as 1902, and since that time, extensive petroleum and chemical
   1-22  industries have flourished; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Brazosport is the world's largest basic-chemical
    2-1  complex; a community of nine cities, it is popular for its
    2-2  deepwater seaport and commercial fishing opportunities; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, The town of Alvin is noted for its surrounding
    2-4  rice fields and chemical processing plants; it is also home to the
    2-5  famous pitcher Nolan Ryan; Angleton, the county seat, is a center
    2-6  for banking, oil, and gas and is well known for its annual October
    2-7  Brazoria County Fair; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, In 1966, the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge was
    2-9  established; this 11,000-acre refuge is on the Gulf Intracoastal
   2-10  Waterway and serves as a nesting area for mottled ducks and as the
   2-11  wintering grounds for snow geese; the Freeport Christmas Bird Count
   2-12  is always one of the highest in the nation and 247 bird species
   2-13  have been identified; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, While Brazoria County offers the opportunities and
   2-15  vitality generated by modern communities and industry, its natural
   2-16  beauty and rural charm have been retained, and the residents of
   2-17  Brazoria County deserve to be proud of their efforts and planning;
   2-18  now, therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-20  74th Legislature, hereby commend the people of Brazoria County for
   2-21  their contributions to our state and extend to them best wishes for
   2-22  a joyous and celebratory Brazoria County Day; and, be it further
   2-23        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-24  residents of Brazoria County as an expression of high regard from
   2-25  the Texas Senate.
