No. 548 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 recognize the Texas Southern University debate team as it visits 1-4 the State Capitol on March 29, 1995; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Throughout its 45 years of operation, the debate 1-6 team has compiled an impressive record of making it to the finals 1-7 and ranking in most of the tournaments in which it has participated; 1-8 and 1-9 WHEREAS, During the 1993-1994 season, the team set a new 1-10 record by winning 121 trophies, exceeding the record year of 1-11 1991-1992, when the team won 119 trophies; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The debate team broke the record of winning 16 1-13 trophies in a single tournament when it won 21 awards at the 1-14 tournament in London; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The team participates in an average of four 1-16 district and regional tournaments per semester; the debating 1-17 season culminates in the spring with attendance at the American 1-18 and National Forensic Associations' Championship Tournaments; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The Texas Southern Debate Team sponsors four 1-20 on-campus tournaments each year; the first tournament is the 1-21 T. F. Freeman All University Intramural Festival, which provides 1-22 the chance for all undergraduates, even those with no experience, 1-23 to compete with each other and win the same kind of trophies that 2-1 the debate team wins in its off-campus competition; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The second competition is the Barbara Jordan 2-3 Invitational Forensic Tournament; this meet is open to all 2-4 colleges and universities throughout the nation and is usually 2-5 held in the spring; and 2-6 WHEREAS, The third meet is the City-Wide Speech Festival; it 2-7 is held in cooperation with the Houston Community College System, 2-8 Houston churches, and community organizations; and 2-9 WHEREAS, The fourth meet is the annual Summer Speech Workshop 2-10 and Tournament; it is open to junior and senior high school students 2-11 across the state; in all of these competitions, students have a 2-12 chance to participate in an experience that will lead to personal 2-13 growth and development; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Members of the debate team are actively involved in 2-15 other campus student organizations such as the Student Government 2-16 Association and the University Program Council; and 2-17 WHEREAS, The schedule each year includes participation in 2-18 the International Forensic Association annual overseas tournament, 2-19 held this year in Madrid, Spain; qualified students will have an 2-20 opportunity to represent Texas Southern University in competition 2-21 with students from nations around the world; now, therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-23 74th Legislature, hereby commend and congratulate the Texas Southern 2-24 University Debate Team on its many victories this year; and, be it 2-25 further 3-1 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-2 team as an expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate. 3-3 ______________________________________ 3-4 President of the Senate 3-5 I hereby certify that the above 3-6 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-7 on March 29, 1995. 3-8 ______________________________________ 3-9 Secretary of the Senate 3-10 ______________________________________ 3-11 Member, Texas Senate 3-12 ______________________________________ 3-13 Member, Texas Senate
