By: Moncrief S.R. No. 564 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-3 pleasure in congratulating Hubert W. Hodges of Fort Worth on 1-4 the grand occasion of his 100th birthday; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native of Bell County, Texas, Mr. Hodges was 1-6 born on March 30, 1895, and moved with his family to Roby when 1-7 he was seven years old; he graduated salutatorian of his senior 1-8 class in June, 1913, and continued his education at Simmons 1-9 College; during his junior year, he left college to teach in 1-10 a rural area; and 1-11 WHEREAS, After volunteering for the United States Army on 1-12 July 18, 1917, at the age of 22, he was sent to Fort Worth and 1-13 was stationed with the 36th Division, Company C, 111th Engineers 1-14 at Camp Bowie for one year; and 1-15 WHEREAS, He was sent to France in July, 1918, where he saw 1-16 combat in Saint Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne, remaining there until 1-17 the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918; and 1-18 WHEREAS, After his discharge at Camp Bowie on June 16, 1919, 1-19 Mr. Hodges returned to Roby and became principal of the high school 1-20 for two years; for the next three years he homesteaded in Colorado 1-21 with four other men; and 1-22 WHEREAS, When the depression came, Mr. Hodges went to work 1-23 for the Works Progress Administration program office as certifying 2-1 officer in Sweetwater before resuming his teaching again in Sardis; 2-2 and 2-3 WHEREAS, Hubert Wilson Hodges married Lillie Sue Melton, 2-4 a schoolteacher from Electra, Texas, on June 25, 1935, and the 2-5 devoted couple enjoyed a long and happy life together until her 2-6 death on April 2, 1987; and 2-7 WHEREAS, In 1937, Mr. Hodges began working for the Texas 2-8 Employment Commission in Big Spring until he was transferred to 2-9 Fort Worth in 1940; he remained a valued and respected auditor 2-10 until his retirement on April 1, 1960; and 2-11 WHEREAS, An esteemed resident of the Retirement Inn, 2-12 Mr. Hodges is truly deserving of the long and happy life with 2-13 which he has been blessed; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-15 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere birthday greetings 2-16 with many happy returns to Hubert Hodges on his 100th birthday; 2-17 and, be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-19 the beloved centenarian as a memento of this exceptional milestone 2-20 in his life. 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 President of the Senate 2-23 I hereby certify that the above 2-24 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-25 on March 28, 1995. 3-1 ______________________________________ 3-2 Secretary of the Senate 3-3 ______________________________________ 3-4 Member, Texas Senate
