1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
1-3 recognizing Houston Community College for its outstanding programs
1-4 for deaf and hard-of-hearing students; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Houston Community College established its highly
1-6 respected Interpreter Training Program in the 1970s; the program
1-7 consists of 200 students and 15 faculty members, half of whom are
1-8 hearing and half of whom are deaf; and
1-9 WHEREAS, The college also created the Sign Language Club
1-10 and Project SOAR in an effort to provide the best educational
1-11 opportunities possible for its students; and
1-12 WHEREAS, The Sign Language Club consists of deaf students
1-13 who tutor nondeaf students in sign language and nondeaf students
1-14 who tutor deaf students in language skills; Project SOAR provides
1-15 sign language interpreters for deaf and hard-of-hearing students;
1-16 and
1-17 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate was proud to receive a visit from
1-18 many of the deaf and hard-of-hearing students from Houston
1-19 Community College on March 13, 1995, and hopes that their stay at
1-20 the Capitol was an enjoyable and productive one; now, therefore,
1-21 be it
1-22 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
1-23 74th Legislature, hereby commend Houston Community College for its
2-1 exceptional programs for the deaf and hearing impaired and extend
2-2 best wishes for continued success; and, be it
2-3 further
2-4 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-5 for Houston Community College as a token of regard from the
2-6 Texas Senate.
