    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Edna Powell of Georgetown was recently honored
    1-3  by the Citizens Memorial Association at the annual black history
    1-4  banquet for her notable contributions to her community; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, For the past nine decades, Edna has worked
    1-6  tirelessly to promote civic pride in the black community by
    1-7  assuring that neighborhoods were well cared for, helping voters
    1-8  to the polls, and serving her church; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Born on a farm near Jonah early in the 20th
   1-10  century, Edna graduated from high school in Georgetown in 1929
   1-11  and was offered a scholarship to Tillotson College, but lacked
   1-12  the  funds to attend; she worked for 10 years as an insurance
   1-13  writer for Continental Casualty and provided for her daughter,
   1-14  Madella Hilliard; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The esteemed civic leader has been active in
   1-16  community affairs since the 1930s working to maintain cemeteries,
   1-17  organizing community celebrations, and helping with the memorial
   1-18  association; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, A dedicated Christian lay leader, Edna Powell
   1-20  is a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church where she has
   1-21  volunteered her time and energies as a trustee, Sunday school
   1-22  teacher, and missions organizer; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, An informal consultant to Congressman Jake Pickle,
    2-1  she acted as a liaison between Georgetown residents and federal
    2-2  programs, including urban renewal along the South San Gabriel
    2-3  River when she spearheaded a campaign to clean up the debris
    2-4  left behind by construction; she also led the efforts to create
    2-5  Chautauqua Park; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, A modest, unassuming woman, Edna Powell has
    2-7  devoted her life to those projects that have provided a better
    2-8  life for her friends and neighbors; now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-10  74th Legislature, hereby commend Edna Powell for her remarkable
   2-11  accomplishments and extend best wishes to her in her future
   2-12  endeavors; and, be it further
   2-13        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-14  Edna Powell as a token of the appreciation of the Texas Senate.
