No. 601 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, On April 4, 1995, Cooke County Day will be 1-3 celebrated by the proud citizens of Cooke County in recognition 1-4 of their illustrious county and its contributions to the 1-5 State of Texas; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Cooke County is located in North Central Texas on 1-7 the edge of the Western Cross Timbers, and about half the 909 square 1-8 miles of the county is covered by these woods; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The first Anglo-American settlement of the area 1-10 began in late 1845 at Spring Creek; created from Fannin County and 1-11 organized by the State Legislature on March 20, 1848, Cooke County 1-12 was named for William G. Cooke, a Republic of Texas Quartermaster 1-13 General and participant in the battle of San Jacinto; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In 1850, a new town, named Gainesville in honor of 1-15 United States Army General Edmond Pendelton Gaines, was set as the 1-16 county seat on land donated by Mary E. Clark; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The Butterfield Stage Line came through the 1-18 area from September, 1858 to March, 1861; the City of Gainesville 1-19 incorporated in 1873, and the first railroad came through the area 1-20 in November, 1879; and 1-21 WHEREAS, After the settlers established themselves, they 1-22 began farming and raising cattle; large areas of the county are 1-23 still devoted to the raising of cattle, hogs, horses, and poultry; 2-1 and 2-2 WHEREAS, The county was once an important cotton center and 2-3 is still famous for its diversified agriculture; it produces wheat, 2-4 barley, oats, corn, and many vegetables and fruits; and 2-5 WHEREAS, In the 1920s, oil was discovered, and this region 2-6 became a source of mineral wealth as well; the region also produces 2-7 natural gas, asphalt, brick clay, molder's sand, and gravel; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Today Cooke County is the center of a prosperous 2-9 region which features drives with lovely panoramic views and 2-10 provides many opportunities for rest and recreation at Lake Texoma 2-11 and other spots in the region; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Blessed with natural beauty, a rich heritage, and 2-13 a dynamic citizenry, Cooke County is truly one of our state's most 2-14 beautiful areas; these fine attributes are indeed deserving of 2-15 special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 74th Legislature, hereby recognize April 4, 1995, as Cooke County 2-18 Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-20 Cooke County as a commemoration of this grand occasion and as an 2-21 expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate. 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the above 2-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-1 on April 3, 1995. 3-2 ______________________________________ 3-3 Secretary of the Senate 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Member, Texas Senate
