    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize Kosti Shirvanian on the 40th anniversary of the founding
    1-4  of his company, Western Waste Industries, which is being celebrated
    1-5  on April 1, 1995; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, An outgoing and gregarious gentleman who has become
    1-7  a confidant to celebrities, presidents, governors, and many other
    1-8  luminaries, Kosti is the epitome of the American dream come true;
    1-9  and
   1-10        WHEREAS, An immigrant from Tehran, Kosti, after serving his
   1-11  adopted country in the Korean conflict, moved to California to
   1-12  pursue his business interests; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, On April 1, 1955, Kosti began Western Disposal with
   1-14  one small, broken-down truck; four years later, he purchased
   1-15  Refuse Hauling, and by 1960 he had four trucks and numerous big
   1-16  accounts; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, In 1966, Kosti signed a contract with Southern
   1-18  Pacific Railroad and was awarded his first exclusive franchise
   1-19  in Inglewood, California; seizing the opportunities afforded him,
   1-20  Kosti expanded his operations and signed his first municipal
   1-21  contract in Texas with the City of Pasadena; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, By 1983, Western Refuse had become Western Waste
   1-23  Industries, and Kosti had the pleasure of seeing his thriving
    2-1  concern, a corporation which now has 1,800 employees and $250
    2-2  million in revenues, become a public company whose shares are
    2-3  traded on the New York Stock Exchange; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Besides being a bold and visionary business leader,
    2-5  Kosti is also a humanitarian who has opened his heart and generously
    2-6  provided for those in need, including earthquake victims in Armenia,
    2-7  Mexico City, and Iran; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Kosti and his wife, Marian,
    2-9  provided a loving home for their three daughters; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, Truly deserving of the blessings bestowed on him,
   2-11  Kosti Shirvanian is deserving of legislative recognition; now,
   2-12  therefore, be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-14  74th Legislature, hereby commend Kosti Shirvanian for his
   2-15  entrepreneurial and humanitarian endeavors; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
   2-17  as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
