    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, On Tuesday, April 4, 1995, Denton County Day
    1-3  will be celebrated by the proud citizens of Denton County in
    1-4  recognition of their illustrious county and its contributions
    1-5  to the State of Texas; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Situated in the 10-county area known as the
    1-7  Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, the rapidly growing area of 952 square
    1-8  miles known as Denton County is now the fifth fastest growing county
    1-9  in the nation and the fastest growing county in the state and is
   1-10  becoming increasingly known for its superior quality of life and
   1-11  tremendous growth in both residential and commercial development;
   1-12  and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Denton County was one of several counties created
   1-14  out of the Peters Colony Grant by the First Legislature of Texas on
   1-15  April 11, 1846; it was named in honor of pioneer preacher, lawyer,
   1-16  and Indian fighter John B. Denton; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Designed in 1895 and restored in 1987, the stately
   1-18  Denton County Courthouse, consisting of massive limestone blocks and
   1-19  crowned with a soaring clock tower, is one of the most impressive
   1-20  sights in North Texas; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, The county seat has an unsettled history; the first
   1-22  four legislatures of Texas authorized changes in the county seat
   1-23  until a site was finally chosen by a vote of the citizens, and the
    2-1  town was named Denton; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, The educational opportunities presented by the
    2-3  county center around the two major universities, the University of
    2-4  North Texas and Texas Woman's University, and around the excellent
    2-5  public and private schools graduating merit scholars; and the
    2-6  county's public schools rank among the state's highest college-bound
    2-7  providers; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Historically a rich agricultural area, the county
    2-9  has now become a growing hub for modern high technology industries
   2-10  with numerous manufacturing facilities including Texas Instruments,
   2-11  Boeing, Xerox, and Peterbilt; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, The county presents varied cultural opportunities
   2-13  from the annual Denton Jazzfest to the Arts Complex, and it has
   2-14  continued its fervent interest in the arts and religion; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, Residents and six million-plus visitors annually
   2-16  are attracted to the popular recreational areas of Lake Lewisville,
   2-17  the new home of the Texas Hydrofest races, Lake Ray Roberts, and
   2-18  Lake Grapevine; now, therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-20  74th Legislature, hereby congratulate the residents of
   2-21  Denton County on this grand occasion; and, be it further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-23  Denton County in recognition of this momentous event and as an
   2-24  expression of congratulations from the Texas Senate.
