No. 628 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to honor 1-3 the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center in Houston for its 1-4 outstanding contributions to the citizens it serves; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A comprehensive social service agency founded 27 1-6 years ago, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center is located 1-7 in the east end of Houston, a densely populated low income area; 1-8 and 1-9 WHEREAS, With financial support from many sources including 1-10 churches, business and industry, foundations, and state and federal 1-11 funds, the center provides a variety of services to residents of 1-12 the neighborhood in a community-wide effort to help the less 1-13 fortunate to help themselves; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Awarded a joint venture grant from the United States 1-15 Health and Human Services Agency, the Texas Department of Human 1-16 Services, and the City of Houston Health and Human Services 1-17 Department, the center was the first child care facility in Texas 1-18 to receive a federal grant to assist families in crisis; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Starting with infants, the center provides day 1-20 care for children of all ages, a reading and study library, a drug 1-21 prevention program, a juvenile delinquency prevention program, boy 1-22 scouting, and a senior citizens program; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Governed by a board of directors, the 2-1 Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center is under the expert 2-2 supervision of Executive Director Madgelean Bush; all the staff 2-3 members are trained by various associations, including the Texas 2-4 Department of Human Services specialists; now, therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-6 74th Legislature, hereby recognize the board of directors, the 2-7 staff, and the men and women who volunteer their time and services 2-8 to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center; and, be it further 2-9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-10 center as an expression of highest regard from the Texas Senate. 2-11 ______________________________________ 2-12 President of the Senate 2-13 I hereby certify that the above 2-14 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-15 on April 4, 1995. 2-16 ______________________________________ 2-17 Secretary of the Senate 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 Member, Texas Senate
