    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The citizens of Hillsboro are celebrating Hillsboro
    1-3  Day at the State Capitol on April 5, 1995, to honor their beautiful
    1-4  city and its unique contributions to the State of Texas; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The principal trade center and seat of Hill County,
    1-6  Hillsboro was a frontier town on the Blackland Prairie when it was
    1-7  established in 1853 as settlers occupied the land that had been
    1-8  home to Indians before they moved westward; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Southerners were drawn to the area in the years
   1-10  following the War Between the States, and, by the turn of the
   1-11  century, Hillsboro had become the center of the second largest
   1-12  cotton-producing county in the world; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, The rich agricultural area also produces an
   1-14  abundance of food crops as well as beef and dairy cattle, horses,
   1-15  and swine; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Hillsboro is known for its beautifully restored
   1-17  Victorian homes and downtown area; placed on the National Register
   1-18  of Historic Places, the 1893 Hill County Cell Block Museum, which
   1-19  is a repository of Hill County history, and the 1881 Missouri, Kansas,
   1-20  and Texas railroad depot are among the many buildings in Hillsboro
   1-21  that are of architectural and historical significance; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Named one of Texas' 10 Most Historic Properties of
   1-23  1993 by the Texas Historical Commission, the Hill County Courthouse
    2-1  was destroyed by a tragic fire on January 1, 1993; built in 1890,
    2-2  the magnificent edifice, which combined architectural accents of
    2-3  Classical Revival, Italianate, and French Second Empire, is already
    2-4  undergoing exterior restoration; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Situated on a rise that overlooks the town, Hill
    2-6  College houses the Colonel Harold B. Simpson Confederate Research
    2-7  Center and the Audie Murphy Gun Museum; more than 3,000 volumes,
    2-8  maps, photographs, correspondence, and paintings are included in
    2-9  the extensive material available for students and researchers; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, One of the city's most illustrious citizens is
   2-11  Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock who has been in the forefront of
   2-12  Texas government for many years serving with distinction as state
   2-13  comptroller before being elected to his seat as president of the
   2-14  Texas Senate; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, Visitors from all over the country are drawn to the
   2-16  historic district's antique shops and driving tours of the lovely
   2-17  old homes; they also find excellent values in the numerous boutiques
   2-18  of the Southwest Outlet Center located on I-35; and
   2-19        WHEREAS, The citizens of Hillsboro are to be commended for
   2-20  their magnificent achievements in restoring and preserving their
   2-21  city's precious heritage and for building a special place for their
   2-22  families as well as future generations to live and prosper; now,
   2-23  therefore, be it
   2-24        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-25  74th Legislature, hereby recognize the notable contributions the
    3-1  citizens of Hillsboro have made to the Lone Star State and extend
    3-2  best wishes to them as they gather to celebrate Hillsboro Day on
    3-3  April 5, 1995; and, be it further
    3-4        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
    3-5  the City of Hillsboro as an expression of the high regard of the
    3-6  Texas Senate and in recognition of its magnificent achievements.
