No. 645 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride in 1-3 paying tribute to the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1-4 and in commending the people of La Marque who are considering naming 1-5 one of the streets of their city in his honor; and 1-6 WHEREAS, One of the most influential men of the 20th century, 1-7 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was born January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, 1-8 Georgia; and 1-9 WHEREAS, A famed orator and clergyman, and a 1964 Nobel Peace 1-10 Prize winner, Dr. King inspired millions to join his passionate 1-11 belief in nonviolence and his struggle for equal rights; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Outspoken yet eloquent, his unforgettable words 1-13 encouraged a generation to strive for improved civil rights, equal 1-14 educational opportunity, and economic well-being for all; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The stirring words of Dr. King's "I have a dream..." 1-16 speech in 1963 still evoke emotions in Americans of every race and 1-17 creed; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Dr. King was a greatly respected leader in our 1-19 country, and when communities and cities pay homage to his memory, 1-20 it inspires citizens throughout the state to reaffirm their 1-21 commitment to equal justice and opportunity for all Americans; 1-22 now, therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-1 74th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and work of 2-2 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and encourage the citizens of La Marque 2-3 to designate a street to be named in his honor; and, be it further 2-4 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-5 residents of La Marque as an expression of esteem from the 2-6 Texas Senate. 2-7 ______________________________________ 2-8 President of the Senate 2-9 I hereby certify that the above 2-10 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-11 on April 6, 1995. 2-12 ______________________________________ 2-13 Secretary of the Senate 2-14 ______________________________________ 2-15 Member, Texas Senate
