1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
1-3 recognize Professor W. Reed Quilliam, Jr., on the momentous
1-4 occasion of his retirement after 26 years of unparalleled
1-5 service to Texas Tech University School of Law; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Alumni, colleagues, and friends paid tribute to
1-7 the George Herman Mahon Professor of Law at a reception in his
1-8 honor on October 28, 1994, in the Godbold Cultural Center; and
1-9 WHEREAS, The eminent law professor has been a guiding
1-10 force in the law school's development and has taught more than
1-11 80 percent of the law students who have graduated; and
1-12 WHEREAS, A native of Beaumont, Professor Quilliam earned
1-13 his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law before
1-14 receiving his master of laws degree from Harvard University; he
1-15 served two years as a United States Navy officer with the Pacific
1-16 Fleet and practiced law in Lubbock for 12 years before joining the
1-17 faculty of Texas Tech University; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Elected to the Texas House of Representatives,
1-19 Professor Quilliam served from January, 1961, to January, 1969;
1-20 during his tenure the original appropriations for Texas Tech Law
1-21 School were made in 1965, and he joined the law school faculty
1-22 in its second year; and
1-23 WHEREAS, His exceptional teaching abilities are reflected in
2-1 the outstanding record that Texas Tech has always maintained in the
2-2 number of students who pass the bar exam; his law classes attract
2-3 large enrollments, and he has been honored with the Outstanding
2-4 Professor Award by popular student vote on five occasions; he was
2-5 the recipient of the President's Excellence in Teaching Award in
2-6 1988 and was the first member of the permanent faculty to hold the
2-7 George Herman Mahon professorship; and
2-8 WHEREAS, Professor Quilliam has freely shared his expertise
2-9 through his extensive writings and his lectures, both regionally
2-10 and nationally; elected an Academic Fellow in the prestigious
2-11 American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the noted attorney
2-12 is a former Director of the Texas Young Lawyers Association and
2-13 former Executive Director of the State Bar of Texas; and
2-14 WHEREAS, A Life Fellow in the Texas Bar Foundation,
2-15 Professor Quilliam was elected a Fellow in the American Bar
2-16 Foundation whose membership is based on professional attainment,
2-17 distinguished service, and commitment to the administration of
2-18 justice; now, therefore, be it
2-19 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-20 74th Legislature, hereby express its deep gratitude to
2-21 Professor W. Reed Quilliam for his dedication to his profession
2-22 and Texas Tech School of Law, with all best wishes for a most
2-23 rewarding retirement; and, be it further
2-24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-25 him as a token of the highest admiration of the Texas Senate.
