By: Montford S.R. No. 664 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Dr. Bill W. Armistead 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-6 of Littlefield in mourning the loss of Dr. Bill W. Armistead who 1-7 died March 17, 1995; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Born May 24, 1919, in Tira, he graduated from 1-9 Sulphur Springs High School in 1936, attended East Texas State 1-10 University for two years, and graduated from Northern Illinois 1-11 College of Optometry in Chicago in 1940; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Dr. Armistead began an optometry practice in 1-13 Littlefield on September 1, 1940, and he married Bernice Gattis 1-14 on July 26, 1941, in Sulphur Springs; and 1-15 WHEREAS, He served his country honorably and practiced 1-16 optometry at Biggs Field in El Paso and at the former Lubbock 1-17 Army Flying School, now Reese Air Force Base; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Dr. Armistead established a wholesale optometry 1-19 laboratory in Lubbock in 1959, and he wrote a book with his brother, 1-20 Speed Reading and Visual Training; and 1-21 WHEREAS, A man who believed in continuing lifelong learning, 1-22 he did postgraduate work at the University of Houston College of 1-23 Optometry, Scott and White Hospital in Temple, and the Texas Eye 2-1 Center in Austin; and 2-2 WHEREAS, A man of deep religious conviction, Bill Armistead 2-3 was an active member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church; 2-4 and 2-5 WHEREAS, One who believed in giving back to his community, 2-6 he was Mayor of Littlefield from 1963 to 1965, and he was President 2-7 of the Chamber of Commerce from 1955 to 1956; and 2-8 WHEREAS, In 1982 the Texas Optometric Association gave him a 2-9 special appreciation award for his contributions to his profession; 2-10 and 2-11 WHEREAS, A respected and beloved member of his community, 2-12 Dr. Armistead will be remembered for his devotion to his family, 2-13 his friends, his church, and his community; his death is an 2-14 irreplaceable loss for his community; now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 2-17 members of his family: his wife, Bernice Armistead; his 2-18 daughter, Kay Neagle; his son, Alan Armistead; his brother, 2-19 Dr. J.
