    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Winston Solar Challenge had its beginnings
    1-3  in 1991 when the Winston School, a small private institution in
    1-4  Dallas, hosted a state science event to encourage young people
    1-5  to get involved in the sciences; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Event organizers brought to the Winston campus
    1-7  the University of North Texas solar car in the hope of stimulating
    1-8  student interest in the possibilities for solar applications; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, North Texas college students had participated in
   1-10  SUNRAYCE '90, a major challenge which pitted college teams in a
   1-11  race from Disneyworld to Detroit; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Seven Winston School students were particularly
   1-13  excited over the possibility of a solar-powered vehicle and
   1-14  decided to visit the University of North Texas to learn more
   1-15  about the future of solar-powered cars, only to hear that the
   1-16  solar technology program had been discontinued; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Undismayed by this turn of events, the boys
   1-18  were challenged to carry on the work and to build their own
   1-19  solar-powered car; aware that another SUNRAYCE was scheduled for
   1-20  June, 1993, they were determined to find some way to participate
   1-21  although race participation was limited primarily to college
   1-22  students; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, The Winston students successfully completed the
    2-1  race, following the college teams on the SUNRAYCE from Dallas to
    2-2  Minneapolis; they continued to race placing second in Phoenix and
    2-3  taking part in the American Tour del Sol; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The 1995 Winston Solar Challenge is the first all
    2-5  high school solar car race ever held; it will bring together 85
    2-6  teams from Canada, Australia, Mexico, and the United States who
    2-7  will be required to run the course on three separate days; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, The Winston School team has proved that high
    2-9  school students have the dedication, imagination, and skill to
   2-10  accomplish their dream, and the Texas Senate is proud to recognize
   2-11  this exceptional group of young men:  Jed Moore, Chris Morgan,
   2-12  Andrew Baham, Will Darnell, Evan Bloom, Mike Buffo, Randy Cross,
   2-13  Brian Brooks, Chad Juliano, and Mike Jobe; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, Dr. Lehman Marks, science teacher and faculty
   2-15  advisor at the Winston School, has instilled in his pupils a
   2-16  desire to persevere despite numerous difficulties; teacher and
   2-17  students have displayed remarkable enthusiasm and confidence
   2-18  throughout their arduous project which has been a test of their
   2-19  endurance and tenacity; now, therefore, be it
   2-20        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-21  74th Legislature, hereby commend the Winston School, its faculty,
   2-22  and students for their exciting venture into the world of science
   2-23  and extend best wishes to the Winston Solar Challenge for continued
   2-24  success in the future; and, be it further
   2-25        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
    3-1  the Winston School Solar Car Team as an expression of the highest
    3-2  regard and admiration of the Texas Senate.
