1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 In Memory
1-3 of
1-4 Herbert Callaway
1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
1-6 of Crockett in mourning the loss of Herbert Callaway who died
1-7 March 25, 1995; and
1-8 WHEREAS, He was born July 25, 1915, in Crockett, the son of
1-9 Sallye and Homer Callaway whose families had lived in the area for
1-10 eight generations; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Mr. Callaway graduated third in his class from
1-12 Crockett High School and attended Texas A&M University, graduating
1-13 in 1937 with a degree in petroleum engineering; on July 6, 1940, he
1-14 married Kathryn Davis; and
1-15 WHEREAS, This patriotic gentleman served his country
1-16 honorably in World War II as Company Commander of F Company of
1-17 the 69th Infantry Division of the United States Army in the Battle
1-18 of the Bulge; he was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service
1-19 and Heroic Achievement; and
1-20 WHEREAS, After the war, he and his wife returned to Crockett,
1-21 and he joined his father in the Callaway Funeral Home and Insurance
1-22 Company, where he served as a funeral director for 50 years; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Very active in fraternal and civic organizations,
2-1 Mr. Callaway was president of the Chamber of Commerce, president
2-2 and 40-year member of the Lions Club, charter member and secretary
2-3 of the Elks Lodge, and chairman of the United Fund; and
2-4 WHEREAS, He offered his expertise to his hometown as
2-5 city councilman and as Industrial Chairman of the Houston County
2-6 Development Foundation; he served on the boards of Davy Crockett
2-7 Savings and Loan, Farmers Merchants Bank of Grapeland, and Farmers
2-8 Guaranty Bank of Kennard; and
2-9 WHEREAS, In 1952, Herbert and his brother, Ramon, became
2-10 sponsors of the Callaway Cubs, which is now the longest-lived
2-11 Little League team in Texas; and
2-12 WHEREAS, This devout Christian was a lifelong member of
2-13 and served as steward of the First United Methodist Church; and
2-14 WHEREAS, A genuinely respected and beloved member of his
2-15 community, Mr. Callaway will be remembered for his devotion to
2-16 his family, his church, and his hometown; now, therefore, be it
2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-18 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-19 members of his family: his wife, Kathryn Davis Callaway; his
2-20 children, Kay Smith and Charles Callaway; his sisters,
2-21 Homer Lacy Callaway Jones, Ann Callaway Hatfield, and
2-22 Sallye Jean Callaway; his brother, Ramon W. Callaway; and his
2-23 five grandchildren; and, be it further
2-24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
2-25 family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
3-1 and when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
3-2 Herbert Callaway.
