    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The citizens of Wise County are celebrating
    1-3  Wise County Days on April 11 and 12 to honor the people and the
    1-4  area's unique contributions to the State of Texas; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Located in North Central Texas, Wise County
    1-6  encompasses an area of 856 square miles, one-fourth of which lies
    1-7  in the Grand Prairie and the remaining three-fourths in the Western
    1-8  Cross Timbers; the soil in the Cross Timbers is sandy and heavily
    1-9  wooded with post oak in the uncleared areas, while the eastern part
   1-10  is rolling and covered with grass; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, The first settler in the county was thought to
   1-12  be Sam Woody, a Tennessean who arrived in 1854 when the Delaware
   1-13  Indians occupied the area; he was soon followed by other
   1-14  homesteaders, including Henry A. Wise of Virginia, for whom
   1-15  the county was named when it was created in 1856; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Decatur was selected as the county seat in 1856;
   1-17  it is closely linked with the development of the West, as the
   1-18  Butterfield Overland Mail Route and the Chisholm Trail passed
   1-19  through the town in the mid-1800s; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, The Wise County Courthouse in Decatur was built
   1-21  in 1895 of pink limestone from Burnet and has been pronounced a
   1-22  perfect architectural example of its type and era; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Predominantly agricultural, Wise County produces
    2-1  cotton and feed crops and is one of the state's leading dairy
    2-2  counties; it is also known for its beef cattle, hogs, goats, and
    2-3  poultry stock; its crops include sorghum, grains, pecans, peanuts,
    2-4  vegetables, and fruits; it is an industrial and manufacturing
    2-5  center; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Wise County contains vast mineral wealth in the
    2-7  form of petroleum, natural gas, clays, stone, sand, and gravel;
    2-8  and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Tourists flock to the recreational facilities such
   2-10  as Lake Bridgeport and Eagle Mountain Lake, which lie in rugged,
   2-11  scenic country; the county boasts the only dude ranch in North
   2-12  Texas and the largest wilderness Scout camp in Texas, as well as
   2-13  the largest youth fair in the state; now, therefore, be it
   2-14        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-15  74th Legislature, hereby join the citizens of Wise County in
   2-16  paying tribute to their county on Wise County Days; and, be it
   2-17  further
   2-18        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-19  the County of Wise in recognition of this celebration and as an
   2-20  expression of congratulations from the Texas Senate.
