No. 715 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 extend a warm welcome to the students of The University of Texas at 1-4 Dallas who are visiting the Senate chambers on April 18, 1995; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Dallas was created in 1-6 1969 on the foundation of the Graduate Research Center of the 1-7 Southwest, a center for advanced students established in 1961 by 1-8 the founders of Texas Instruments; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Originally offering doctorate and master's degrees, 1-10 the young institution began accepting junior and senior 1-11 undergraduate students in 1976 and sophomore and freshman students 1-12 in 1989; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The university has a challenging future, and its 1-14 mission is to achieve preeminence in undergraduate math, science, 1-15 and engineering education in the North Texas region as well as 1-16 continuing its traditional role of providing ongoing, professional 1-17 education to adult students and students transferring from local 1-18 community colleges; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Dallas is the primary 1-20 upper division institution in the eastern half of the metroplex; 1-21 the university is understandably proud of the educational 1-22 excellence it offers junior college transfers and of its success 1-23 with lower division students; and 2-1 WHEREAS, During the past five years, the university has 2-2 created a tremendous academic resource for the state; the freshman 2-3 classes have consistently ranked among the best of any public 2-4 university in the country; approximately one-half of the 1993 and 2-5 1994 freshman classes are national merit scholarship finalists 2-6 or semifinalists; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The university's first college bowl team in 1994 2-8 was a finalist in national competition, and the 1995 team as 2-9 regional champion will compete in the nationals in April of this 2-10 year; and 2-11 WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Dallas offers courses 2-12 of study in seven schools and its high quality academic research 2-13 is an integral part of the institution's heritage; it features a 2-14 diverse student body with many international students from around 2-15 the world who are drawn to the excellent curricula offered; now, 2-16 therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 74th Legislature, hereby recognize and welcome the students from 2-19 The University of Texas at Dallas and extend best wishes to them 2-20 for a most enjoyable and informative visit to the State Capitol; 2-21 and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-23 them as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the above 3-2 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-3 on April 12, 1995. 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Secretary of the Senate 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 Member, Texas Senate
