    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is especially proud
    1-3  to congratulate Nancy Bohman of San Antonio who was recently chosen
    1-4  to receive the 1995 Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer
    1-5  Service; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Nancy Bohman has spent her adult life helping human
    1-7  beings enhance the quality of life for themselves, their families,
    1-8  and their community; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, A visionary whose ideas and efforts have benefitted
   1-10  society, Nancy Bohman formed a coalition of diverse people to
   1-11  participate in a community-wide initiative to reduce the demand for
   1-12  illegal drugs and alcohol; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, The purpose of the initiative was to demonstrate
   1-14  that by consolidating resources and creating a single community-wide
   1-15  system of prevention, early identification, treatment, and
   1-16  after-care, East and Southeast San Antonio could achieve reductions
   1-17  in the demand for and use of illegal drugs and alcohol; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, The result of this initiative was the successful
   1-19  first-year implementation of San Antonio Fighting Back of the
   1-20  United Way; it has helped to reweave the fabric of neighborhoods
   1-21  by building strong families, neighborhood pride, and safe schools
   1-22  free from drug dealing and gang violence; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Nancy Bohman's interest in her community began
    2-1  in 1949 during her tenure as Program Director of the Young Women's
    2-2  Christian Association Pine Street Branch; she continued her work in
    2-3  influencing youths' behavior and shaping young people's minds as a
    2-4  social science instructor for Saint Phillip's College and as an
    2-5  elementary school teacher for the San Antonio Independent School
    2-6  District; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, Mrs. Bohman organized the first social service
    2-8  agency in East San Antonio, Project FREE, and initiated the
    2-9  Eastside PAC which developed the Eastside master plan with the
   2-10  San Antonio Development Agency; she also served as the Project
   2-11  Director of the Metro Comprehensive Nutrition Project for older
   2-12  citizens of Bexar County and as the Social Services Administrator
   2-13  for the Metropolitan Office on Aging of the Texas Department of
   2-14  Human Resources and Services; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, As an active member of San Antonio Fighting Back
   2-16  Management Board, she dedicates her time and energies to the
   2-17  development of the organization by making presentations to local
   2-18  companies and organizations about the success of the program; and
   2-19        WHEREAS, San Antonio Fighting Back enhances the self-esteem
   2-20  and decision making skills of young people, enhances the family
   2-21  through communication skills, and enhances the pride and involvement
   2-22  of the community through beautification projects, youth activities,
   2-23  neighborhood crime watches, and foot patrols; now, therefore, be it
   2-24        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-25  74th Legislature, hereby commend Nancy Bohman for her important
    3-1  contributions to the residents of East and Southeast San Antonio
    3-2  and extend best wishes to her for continued success in the years
    3-3  ahead; and, be it further
    3-4        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
    3-5  her as an expression of the appreciation of the Texas Senate.
