No. 743 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-3 recognizing the members of the Texas Historical Commission and 1-4 the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance on the occasion of 1-5 their workshop, African Americans and Heritage Preservation, 1-6 which is being presented April 29, 1995, for the benefit of 1-7 the citizens of Houston; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Since 1953, the Texas Historical Commission 1-9 has guided the state in its efforts to protect and preserve 1-10 its heritage and culture; the Greater Houston Preservation 1-11 Alliance was founded in 1978 with the mission of preserving 1-12 historic buildings, sites, and neighborhoods throughout the 1-13 Houston area; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Underwritten by Bank United, the African 1-15 Americans and Heritage Preservation is a workshop designed 1-16 to promote the preservation and appreciation of Houston's 1-17 architectural and cultural historic resources; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Preservation programs such as this workshop 1-19 can help bring members of the community together, keep vacant 1-20 lots from taking over neighborhoods, and help communities to 1-21 develop a sense of pride and self-respect; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The African Americans and Heritage Preservation 1-23 workshop will include speeches on such topics as how historical 2-1 markers and listings can channel tourism revenue to ethnic 2-2 communities, how historic houses can affect the character of 2-3 a neighborhood and how to renovate them, and what communities 2-4 can do to restore their historic cemeteries; and 2-5 WHEREAS, The program will offer a review of basic 2-6 techniques for conducting oral history projects and a synopsis 2-7 of the importance of archaeology in the preservation of African 2-8 American heritage; the keynote speech is entitled "Texan African 2-9 American Leaders after Emancipation"; and 2-10 WHEREAS, The African Americans and Heritage Preservation 2-11 workshop will be of benefit to the community and help to develop 2-12 awareness of the work and goals of the Texas Historical Commission 2-13 and the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance; now, therefore, 2-14 be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 74th Legislature, hereby commend the organizers and sponsors of 2-17 the African Americans and Heritage Preservation for presenting 2-18 this valuable workshop to the citizens of Houston and extend best 2-19 wishes for an enjoyable and productive event; and, be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-21 the Texas Historical Commission and the Greater Houston Preservation 2-22 Alliance as an expression of appreciation from the Texas Senate. 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 President of the Senate 2-25 I hereby certify that the above 3-1 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-2 on April 20, 1995. 3-3 ______________________________________ 3-4 Secretary of the Senate 3-5 ______________________________________ 3-6 Member, Texas Senate
