    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                            Burton S. Sneed
    1-5        WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow that the Texas Senate noted
    1-6  the passing of prominent citizen and educator Burton S. Sneed who
    1-7  died on March 18, 1995; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Born in Cuney, Texas, on November 27, 1925, he
    1-9  attended community schools before he went to Prairie View A&M
   1-10  University, where he earned a bachelor's degree and a master's
   1-11  degree in science as well as a master's degree in administration;
   1-12  and
   1-13        WHEREAS, An extremely patriotic man, he honorably served
   1-14  his country in the Korean conflict; his courage and unparalleled
   1-15  bravery earned for him the United Nations Service Award, the
   1-16  Korean Service Medal, and two Bronze Stars; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Highly respected in his community, his county,
   1-18  and his state, this renowned educator touched the lives of
   1-19  generations of students; he was an inspiration to everyone who
   1-20  knew him; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Each of his students remembers Mr. Sneed and
   1-22  his teachings; he believed that, through education, anything was
   1-23  attainable; Burton Sneed was a teacher who commanded respect, and,
    2-1  at the same time, he was a man who could talk to a child on a
    2-2  child's level; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman had been honored
    2-4  by his community when he was named recipient of the K. Wolens
    2-5  Distinguished Service Award and the Kerens Chamber of Commerce
    2-6  Man of the Year Award; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, A man of strong Christian faith, Mr. Sneed served
    2-8  as a deacon and longtime member of New Hope Baptist Church of
    2-9  Kerens; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, A man of ability and unquestioned integrity, the
   2-11  retired teacher was a member and past director of the Kerens Chamber
   2-12  of Commerce and the Kerens Housing Authority; he served on the
   2-13  boards of the Navarro Regional Hospital and the Texas State Teachers
   2-14  Credit Union; he was also on the Advisory Board of the Cedar Creek
   2-15  Bank; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, Active in community affairs, Mr. Sneed was a member
   2-17  of the Kerens Kiwanis Club and the Kerens Volunteer Fire Department,
   2-18  and he was an associate member of the Navarro County Sheriff's
   2-19  Reserve; and
   2-20        WHEREAS, Mr. Sneed's wise counsel and good judgment will
   2-21  be missed and remembered with gratitude by all with whom he was
   2-22  associated; his passing is an irreplaceable loss to his community;
   2-23  now, therefore, be it
   2-24        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-25  74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to his family:
    3-1  his wife, LaVerne Sneed; his daughter and son-in-law, Pam and
    3-2  Ralph Porter; his sisters, Bernice Greenwood, Benna Lewis, and
    3-3  Gladys Thomas; and his two grandchildren; and, be it further
    3-4        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
    3-5  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
    3-6  the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
    3-7  do so in memory of Burton S. Sneed.
