No. 777 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 William Arnold Scott 1-5 WHEREAS, The death of William Arnold "Bill" Scott, at age 46, 1-6 represented a great personal loss to his loved ones and his many 1-7 friends in Houston and throughout the State of Texas; and 1-8 WHEREAS, This highly respected member of the Texas Board of 1-9 Health and former member of Mayor Kathy Whitmire's Task Force on 1-10 AIDS was a native of New York State, where he earned degrees in 1-11 sociology and social work; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Settling in Houston, Bill Scott began his work as 1-13 a psychotherapist and social worker in 1976; and even though AIDS 1-14 activism was not popular, and indeed the disease was hardly known 1-15 at that time, Mr. Scott began to focus his community mission on 1-16 education, counseling, and treatment of AIDS; a co-founder of 1-17 the AIDS Foundation of Houston and a past president of the National 1-18 Lesbian and Gay Health Foundation, he served on the board of the 1-19 AIDS Equity League; and 1-20 WHEREAS, As the fuller scope and dimension of this tragic 1-21 epidemic was revealed, Mr. Scott's mission extended to thousands 1-22 whose lives and personal dignity he fought for; and 1-23 WHEREAS, His work and words gained depth and authenticity when 2-1 he was willing to share with elected officials and the policymakers 2-2 of Texas health guidelines and services that he, too, suffered from 2-3 that grave disease; his own courage and valiant struggle were an 2-4 inspiration to all who knew him; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Bill Scott's lasting legacy to his community is 2-6 immeasurable; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-8 74th Legislature, hereby express sincere condolences to his 2-9 family and close friends; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them 2-11 as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and 2-12 that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-13 William Arnold Scott. 2-14 ______________________________________ 2-15 President of the Senate 2-16 I hereby certify that the above 2-17 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-18 on April 24, 1995, by a rising vote. 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 Secretary of the Senate 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 Member, Texas Senate
