    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                         James Henry Standley
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
    1-6  of Madisonville and Madison County in mourning the loss of lifelong
    1-7  resident James Henry Standley, who died March 8, 1995, at the age
    1-8  of 71; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, He was a graduate of Madisonville High School who,
   1-10  after a short stint in the grocery business in Pasadena, moved back
   1-11  home at the age of 24, and he and his wife, Vera, purchased the Corral
   1-12  Cafe in 1959; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, The long hours he dedicated to learning in the
   1-14  kitchen and nurturing the cafe were amply repaid as it became a
   1-15  Madison County institution and "a shining landmark" in the lives
   1-16  of thousands of local people who gathered there; his creation was
   1-17  more than a business, it was a place of the heart, woven into the
   1-18  fabric of communal life, and made even more endearing by having
   1-19  hosted the occasional visiting celebrity; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Mr. Standley found time amidst his arduous working
   1-21  hours and the demands of daily life to strive to bolster the
   1-22  economic prosperity of the county by years of service in the
   1-23  Madison County Chamber of Commerce, as well as on the chamber's
    2-1  Board of Directors and as the chamber's Vice-President; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, He was a committed member of the First Baptist
    2-3  Church of Madisonville, where he had served as a deacon since 1947;
    2-4  and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Standley raised their family in the
    2-6  close-knit community, giving unstintingly of their friendship and
    2-7  support, and providing a positive influence on the lives of countless
    2-8  people, and James Henry Standley's absence will be keenly felt; now,
    2-9  therefore, be it
   2-10        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-11  74th Legislature, hereby express sincere condolences to the members
   2-12  of his family:  his wife, Vera; his daughter and son-in-law, Janet
   2-13  and Tommy Andrews; his grandchildren, Cary Andrews, Tracie Theiss,
   2-14  and James Kevin "Dink" Andrews; and his great-grandchildren,
   2-15  Hailey Theiss and Ty Theiss; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
   2-17  for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
   2-18  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
   2-19  so in memory of James Henry Standley.
