No. 815 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize Sir Derek Barton on the occasion of his receiving 1-4 the 1995 Priestly Award; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A Nobel Prize-winning chemist, Sir Derek Barton 1-6 was selected for the award by the American Chemical Society during 1-7 the society's national meeting recently in Anaheim; and 1-8 WHEREAS, The 76-year-old chemist has been a distinguished 1-9 professor of chemistry at Texas A&M University since 1986, and 1-10 he has spent the majority of his career in France and his homeland, 1-11 Great Britain; and 1-12 WHEREAS, A noted scholar, he won the Nobel Prize in 1969 1-13 for his work with steroids and molecular structures; he is one of 1-14 two professors at Texas A&M University who have won the Nobel Prize; 1-15 and 1-16 WHEREAS, Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1972 for 1-17 his work, this outstanding scientist won the American Chemical 1-18 Society's Second Centennial Chemistry Award in 1974, commemorating 1-19 the anniversary of Joseph Priestly's discovery of oxygen; this award 1-20 is given only once every 100 years; now, therefore, be it 1-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 1-22 74th Legislature, hereby congratulate Sir Derek Barton on 1-23 receiving the 1995 Priestly Award; and, be it further 2-1 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-2 him as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate. 2-3 ______________________________________ 2-4 President of the Senate 2-5 I hereby certify that the above 2-6 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-7 on April 26, 1995. 2-8 ______________________________________ 2-9 Secretary of the Senate 2-10 ______________________________________ 2-11 Member, Texas Senate
