    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
    1-3  joining the citizens of the Greater Channel Area in recognizing
    1-4  May 4, 1995, as the 44th annual National Day of Prayer; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The theme for this year's National Day of Prayer
    1-6  is "Seek His Face," and Americans across the country will gather
    1-7  to pray on behalf of our nation and its leaders; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Civic prayers and national days of prayer have had
    1-9  a long and enduring history in America, dating back to the First
   1-10  Continental Congress in 1775; the annual National Day of Prayer
   1-11  was established in 1952 when Congress passed a joint resolution
   1-12  that was signed by President Harry Truman; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, The founders of our nation had a strong belief in
   1-14  God and in the power of prayer, and the National Day of Prayer is
   1-15  an opportunity for citizens to reflect on our history and pay homage
   1-16  to our moral and religious heritage; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, The residents of the Greater Channel Area have
   1-18  prepared for this special day; mayors throughout the area have
   1-19  recognized May 4 as the National Day of Prayer, and pastors are
   1-20  holding special prayer vigils in churches; a high noon celebration
   1-21  is planned in Galena Park; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, The coordinator for the Greater Channel Area,
   1-23  Mrs. Fay Joyce Wright, suggests that Texans observe the day by
    2-1  hanging our nation's flag outside of homes and businesses and
    2-2  discussing the significance of the day with our friends and
    2-3  colleagues; now, therefore, be it
    2-4        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-5  74th Legislature, hereby commend the people of the Greater Channel
    2-6  Area for organizing prayer vigils and celebrations on May 4 and
    2-7  encourage all Texans to observe this year's National Day of Prayer;
    2-8  and, be it further
    2-9        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-10  the Greater Channel Area as an expression of high regard from the
   2-11  Texas Senate.
