No. 851 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-3 joining the citizens of Houston and the African Cultural Exchange, 1-4 Incorporated, in recognizing the weekend of May 19 through 21, 1995, 1-5 as Africa Day; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The occasion will be the second annual celebration 1-7 of Africa Day in Houston, and the festivities will take place at 1-8 the School of Technology of Texas Southern University, beginning 1-9 with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee as the keynote speaker; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Africa Day was established in 1958 by the late 1-11 President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkruma, during the conference of 1-12 independent African states held in Accra, Ghana; the day was 1-13 established to mark the progress of black people throughout the 1-14 world and to symbolize their commitment to cultural, social, and 1-15 economic freedom; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The three-day event in Houston will focus on 1-17 entrepreneur awareness and will be an opportunity for African, 1-18 Caribbean, and American business people to learn about improvement 1-19 and become involved in possible business investment opportunities; 1-20 and 1-21 WHEREAS, Africa Day is a historical event that promotes cultural 1-22 pride and harmony and is an appropriate time for citizens to express 1-23 appreciation for the work of the many talented black leaders who have 2-1 inspired Americans to reaffirm their commitment to equal justice and 2-2 opportunity for all; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-4 74th Legislature, hereby commend the African Cultural Exchange, 2-5 Incorporated, for organizing activities on Africa Day and extend 2-6 best wishes for a joyous and productive event; and, be it further 2-7 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-8 African Cultural Exchange, Incorporated, as an expression of regard 2-9 from the Texas Senate. 2-10 ______________________________________ 2-11 President of the Senate 2-12 I hereby certify that the above 2-13 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-14 on April 28, 1995. 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 Secretary of the Senate 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 Member, Texas Senate
